Sundancer boats were made by Sonny Leonard and most were "splashes" of the Youngblood TX gull wing hull. Sonny built a lot of 460 Ford powered TX19's with Dominator Jets. He also built a very good tandem wheel trailer that were sold with most of his boats.
Because of the Ford, Dominator combination, I think the TX design is what your friend has. If so, the TX hull was originally used for circle racing by Jim Youngblood in the 70's, but many were, and still are used as drag racing boats.
The Sundancer boats were originally made around
San Antonio, Texas in the late 70's and early 80's.
The gull wing hull design of the TX hull creates a lot of lift which allows the hulls to run relatively dry, but can cause blow over problems at speeds over 90 or in high winds.
The Sundancer was relatively heavy compared to the Youngblood and they normally hold up pretty well over the years. Because of their weight they seem to stay in the water a little better than the light weight Youngbloods.
The TX hull design is still used today by California Performance Boats.
If your friend has a TX, he has a high performance hull that is near the top on the list of most performance drag boat enthusiasts, but a design that can get an inexperienced boater in trouble very quickly.
