I was told my some butthead that my rods arent "the cool ones" they arent the heavy duty industrial truck rods, I have the light duty ones and have been told they are no good for boat motors, considering they have worked for 24 years and are in good shape, and my boat only turns at 4700 rpm anyway, I think they will be fine. any body have any input ?

Hell they should be fine. But have them shot peened to strengthen them and you should have no worry.

Not the "cool ones". Been using them for 24 years? And your question is?

"Not cool" or "cool"
Two schools of thought to think about are...
1) Cool, Hey they have worked for 24 years so they must be fine right. Get them reconditioned and you run them some more.
2) Not Cool, Hey they have been in service for 24 years. You nd a few others have got your moneys worth out of them. Maybe it's time to stop using them before one breaks.
The choice is up to you. Nobody can say exactly when one will fail. They could last a long time but nothing lasts for ever.
If one fails it's by by block, crank and at least one head. How much is a new set of rods?
If anyone needs a 20+ year old set of +.400 Carrillos for a BBC let me know. I went with option #2 and retiered them.

Hallet there are two types only the football head ones and the square or rect shape ones. The scj and truck rods are the football ones the car ones are the square or rect shape.
I myself have the car ones and i turn my motor to 55-5600 with no prob at all and feel safe doing so.Whatever you have will be fine.

I would think they would be just fine if the machine shop checked them and found the bores to be round and within specs for size.
No more hours than most boats get run, those 24 boat years probably only equal about 6 months in car years. heck, those rods are just now getting well seasoned.

Dude, I never thought about it like that, these rods are probably brand new. Wsm is kind of like a boating McGuyver. http://free.***boat.net/ubb/smile.gif

Let's say 100 hours per year x 24 years = 2400 hours. Let's say an automobile averages 50 mph over that time span = 120,000 miles thats a lot of driving in 6 mo. hehe

I look at it the other way. How many time do you run your boat flat out?
How many times do you run the old station wagon flat out and for how long do you do it?
Most cars don't see anything over 2,500 rpm and most boat owners don't think twice about running across the lake at 4,000 rpm. (Or in my case 7,800 http://free.***boat.net/ubb/smile.gif )

polish the side beams, shot pean and have ARP rod bolts put in when they are resized and tell the cool ones to kiss your ass they will be MUCH stronger than any stock rod could be http://free.***boat.net/ubb/smile.gif

By the time you pay for all of that, aren't you starting to get closer to the price of new rods?
Cool rods or not, if Hallet has decided to hold onto his ride for a while and build a motor to last it might be time to envoke the "pay once, cry once" clause. However, I think we may be missing something here. How many RPM is Hallet planing on turning and for what duration. If the motors not going to see 5k plus RPM, the wear he can get out of his current rods is probably legnthened substantially.

You can get a brand new set of Scat or Eagle 4340 rods for like $300. A set of 5140 or 4130 are only around $200. It seems to me if the motor is still torn down you pony up with the extra few bucks and ensure that you don't wipe out a whole motor. What it comes down to is 24 years of use.... those puppies are tired.

Hallett, every book states the scj rods are better [I had them in my 429]than the rectangular bolted ones, but I've yet to see one broken.I've got a 460 in a 1978 19 spectra with the regular rods running strong with substantial HP over stock 320 HP.There's only one way to break these ford rods http://free.***boat.net/ubb/wink.gif,when yo develop a knock in the bottom end [it would never happen ,unless a shadetree mechanic built your engine]rev the sucker over 5000 for a few minutes to destroy the entire engine ,so you don't have to deal with the mechanic to patch things up http://free.***boat.net/ubb/wink.gif.The rod would probably break at the beams, but doubt the rod bolts would give up http://free.***boat.net/ubb/wink.gif

Hey Aaron, if you want to feel special and use the "cool" rods I think I've got some I could dig up. I'll even polish the beams for free.
