OK, folks - NEED some help/input here - I'm in the process of getting (trying to get!) my pump housing, bowl and diverter powdercoated, and here's my question - I'm being told that even if it's currently powdercoated (diverter, housing) and/or painted (bowl), the part needs to be stripped.....NOW, here's the part that kinda has me worried - this guy claims that even if I DO go ahead and strip the parts, the parts are sand-cast and WILL "off-gas", causing possible bubbling, cratering and irregularities in the powdercoat finish - http://free.***boat.net/ubb/eek.gif this just doesn't sound right to me, it sounds more like this guy is creating an "out" for himself, so if the finish is unsatisfactory, he can say "well, I warned you",(and STILL take my money) y'know? SOOOO - what I need are your impressions and/or knowledge to support (or debunk) this guy's story/claims - anyone? Thanks for ANY help you all can provide! http://free.***boat.net/ubb/smile.gif

I have powder coated 2 pumps; main body, bowl, nozzles and even a couple of aluminum mufflers. The pumps are several years old and other that nicks and gouges from rocks and trees they are in good condition. The mufflers have lost some of their shine but can be polished back to life with a little effort. Just make sure the guys knows that you don't want any beads in the sealing areas. I stuffed chunks of rags in mine when he blasted them and he removed them prior to coating. I washed all the parts thourghly prior to assembly and have not had a problem. Find a new guy if he is making you nervous.

Not sure where you live, but I use Advanced Finishing Systems in Riverside for all of my work. Remember, the people doing the work need to be told what areas you want masked off, so as not to get the particles on them. Also, they will usually sand blast your stuff prior to powdercoating, so I wouldnt worry about getting the old paint off of there. -DD out

I think he is just warning you that it may be a problem if it does Off-gas
