Very nice Malcolm. What is the setup for the oil filter? Looks like a bypass of some sort. What are the specs and mods on your 455? Here's a little info that I've gathered since adding a massive oil coller on my 455. In addition to my 9qt pan, I've added an offshore oil cooler (adds 1 qt) to the engine. I don't have any restrictors in the engine at all and can now hold the engine at WOT without having to worry about sucking the pan dry. I don't know if the cooler added restriction, but it sure as hell helps.

Had to use Ford red, they don't have rocket red. I got a little farther today.

Actually it's a 403 Olds. I'm using early 350 heads to get the compression up a bit, and putting in the old 455 hipo marine cam. It's .474" lift, 308 duration. Also going with a HV pump, pick-up, and drive along with an 8 quart pan. That should be in tomorrow's pics. :D

Wetdream, that's just an adapter to move the oil filter around the bell housing so you can reach it.

LOOKING GOOD!
I have a 455 and am most likely going to go with a remote dual filer setup I can't beleive how damn small this oil filter is!

Foolish, you want to stay away from the dual filters. When one of them becomes plugged, the other has a chance of blowing completely off. If you use Summit's spin on adapter and relocation bracket, you will be able to use a much bigger oil filter. The Olds filters are small, but the new filters I am using are almost 3x as big.

:D Hey Malcolm, what kind of paint did you use. It sure came out nice. I just painted mine and I used aluminum paint and it does not look nearly as good as yours.

The paint was Plasticoat engine paint, I got it from Pepboys. The intake is painted with some cast aluminum engine paint from Schucks.

I am really just getting sick and tired of breaking my wrist tying to get the oil filter off, I like Malcom's setup too!
How much was yours Malcom?

Either don't put your filter so tight or buy a K&N Filter which has a 1" nut on the bottom so you can use a wrench or socket to remove the filter.

Foolish

Yeah that's what I do wink I use the K&N. Still a PITA to get my hand in there with the OT's and their water injection lines. Oh well. :D

Cooler setup.
This is located above the fuel tank, tucked in under the gunnel on the starboard side.

The relocation filter. Horizontally mounting hasn't been a problem at all.

Where did you get the oil cooler and what kind is it? Do you have to relocate your oil filter to make the oil cooler work?

This is my oil cooler setup. It's the stock berk setup except a new exchanger and I had to have the adapter milled thinner to accomidate the hardins and regrind the galleys to match. I've got .035" clearance between the oil filter attachment and the exhaust.

Here's monday's pics. After all the talk about oil filter mounts, I ended up having to put the old neck-breaker back on there, at least for now.

LOOKS GOOD MALCOM!!!!!!!!!!!
Why the breather on the fill neck? I got a breather on my valve cover but not on the fill neck. Just for added breathing? Do you run PCV?
I'm in the lots of little things stage right now.
Good Luck!

Breather? what breather? That's just a chrome 1/4 twist cap. I have a PCV for the right side and a breather for the left side (just not on there yet). :D

Do yourself a favor Malcolm DITCH those Edelbrock crap stamped covers!!!! Mine leaked all over my engine today. I am going to put on my M/T's tomorrow. Those covers not only can't hold any real torque (cause the just get dimpled by the bolt) but if they aren't tight enough they still leak (its like a catch 22). If anyone wants mine....pay shipping and their YOURS! I really just want to bash the shit out of them though cause they made my boat look like what half of AZ is right now...SMOKEY

malcolm
07-09-2003, 06:51 AM
Yeah, I'm not crazy about 'em either, but they're all I've got at the moment. I'll be on the look out for some aluminum ones after the Idaho run. I hope they don't leak too much, they didn't before and that was with only 5 bolts. Now they have 10, thanks to early heads. wink

looks good Malcolm, keep the pictures comming. Hell since my motor is out I may as well paint my block also, how did you prep the block before painting it? getting the oil off etc.

malcolm

Foolish - That adapter ended up hiting the exhaust log, it was made for a 455 and the 403 being a small block made the log closer to the filter. It just barely misses the stock filter base. I may still do something with it, but I ran outta time. I have to run over the weekend. :D
dgie - We have a big jet wash tank at our shop. I ran it though there a couple times. wink
Here's today's pics, it's basically done.
