Does anyone run a SBC in there jet? I know that jets like a lot of torque and small blocks aren't famous for pulling stumps. I just wasted another 455 and want to keep the boat on the water while building a 454. Jethro

Jethro,
I have 2 aluminum Eagle boats, both powered by small block chevs. The lastest and greatest one is a 434ci small block; Dart Little 'M' block, Dart pro-comp heads. It runs 500 HP with over 500 FT/LBS torque from 3400 - 5000 rpm. The second is a 383ci that has 445 HP with a peak torque of 465 FT/LBS. Lots of the guys running river racing boats run small blocks. In my opinion, they are hard to beat. I read about so many guys and their problems with the 455 Olds, I wonder why they put them selves through all that just to enjoy a day of boating. I'm not flaming you 455 guys, as I know that everyone has their own ideas and opinions. 200 lbs less weight in the back of your boat makes up for lots of HP and torque required to go the same speed.

well, its not a super special s,b. just a local rebuild. but i will be changing the cam, and going with a gear to gear. it'll be a nice slow build, but cheap comparing to big blocks. it'll get a new intake and carb. so to make a long story short, parts are cheap so you get a lot of bang for the buck. any cam/intake combo ideas?
suggestions would be appreciated. thanks

I run a 350 Olds in a 19' sundowner.
I used to run a 455 as well but they do not last for me.
The 350 will take alot more abuse and it does
55mph on a very mild motor!
All the 455 mounts and ever the exhaust will work on the small block

If you are just looking to keep the boat on the water while you build a BBC you do not want to put in a SBC.
You would have to buy all new motor plates and exhaust! as well as water pump block off plate
This stuff would run you 600-800 bucks and then you would have to turn around and buy it again when you finish the 454 cause none of it will interchange.
On the other hand if you are looking for a quick fix while you build your fire breathing bowtie,
You can use all your 455 stuff on the more reliable and cheaper olds 350!
its your money but think about it before you blow a bunch of it
Just tryin to help
