The problems

Are the grooves where the impeller rides normal?

20+ years of crap blasting eek!
http://www.hotboatpics.com/pics/data/500/25email_pump_pics0009.jpg
so this is able to be filled with putty....

wear part of impeller that rides on the second picture
These are the areas that concern me, the bearings and shafts seem in great shape. I'd like to do this at home, but if its got to go to a shop so be it.

AKZC your pump is in almost identical shape as mine.
Here's a few things. Those rings are wear rings. If those are out of tolerance your going you would either need to get a new set pressed on or a new stator housing. If they are worn hard to tell by picture. If they are worn water will slip past and cause downgraded performance.
Rutland Tools Online store sells the Devcon aluminum putty that Panther uses. To fill in those pits.
I choose to send the pump to jim cause I lack the tools to bring the pump back within tolerances. I want a 20 year fix not a seasonal.

So that is probably normal wear. I will gather more info amd move on.

Yes that wear you see on the panther jet is pretty much standard. As neoburn stated, the rings that mate to the inside of the impeller are called stator rings and as they wear you will loose output thrust. As far as the pitting in the case goes, you can fill them but they won't last more than a few years. I have done the repair many times. I prefer to buy a new suction housing but cost and need are always a factor here. The trick set up is to blue print the jet. With this build an alum bronze ring is installed in the area where you have pitting. A tighter clearance is then obtainable for an increase of thrust out put of up to 15 % Your jet will have to be surveyed up close so different options can be considered. In my opinion it only pays to do it right. I tell my customers that you have to pro rate the cost over the life time that you have the boat then it makes sense. If you spend say 1200.00 and own the boat for ten years with no jet problems, that will work out to 120.00 per year for hassle free service. I doubt that you could do that with an out drive. The choice is yours. Good Luck. Jim www.performancejet.com (http://www.performancejet.com)

I was going to answer those questions but I see you already got to them Jim.
How was your little trip? I hope you got some R&R before the springtime onslaught.
I'm going to try to get over to see you next week, is there a day that's best?

Thanks Jim. One more basic question, Whats the turn around time for the 15% performance upgrade and rebuild usually? Shooting for a middle to late April completion time for the boat. I will contact you soon via e-mail, Thanks again.

Just to follow the ***boat tradition of deviating from the topic before the 10th post.
Jim I got my Panther order and it's boxed up. Going to try to get it out on Monday Morning.

With the 20+ years of wear to repair, I'm having to wait till next winter to get the Panther-vetor :D And I have some interesting ideas I want to mess with, after looking at the pump a little closer.
Anybody hear any thing from BowtieOmega on his project?

NeoBurn, when you shipped your pump did you include all the linkage and the coupler to the motor(not the velocity joint, the round thing that hooks to the bell housing) wanting to get mine boxed up :) and get this turd back in the water.
What did you in up doing in your bilge area?

KC Where ever you ship your pump , you should send it complete so that it can be sent back complete and ready to install. If I undersatnd you correctly that round piece you are talking about is the thrust bearing cap. It needs to be sent. Jim
