My motor 468 10:1 makes the most rpm's at 32 degrees...35+ did nothing for me. Sometimes more isnt always better.
I would start at 30 degrees all in by approx. 3000 rpm...and increse it by 2 degrees each run, and see where your highest rpm's come in at.

Hammerdown, I also have a 468, 10:1, and people have told me to set it at 12 to 16 at 1000RPM,or 34deg. at 3400RPM ???? this is my first BBC and I'm confused, mine won't even run at idle anywhere near 12deg. dies at about 16, but this is what I'm worried about, where it runs best(not good, just better) is at about 900RPM the timing mark is STRAIGHT UP on top ?? not even close to the timing tab, does this sound like cam timing not right or a slipping damper ? I haven't started tearing things apart yet, Manuel

First thing I would check is the Harmonic Damper. Top dead center that thing at one direction...then the other.
