O to be young again...
I got my first boat when I was in college. I had the best times with it. Looking back, the boat was a real "ruff around the edges" but I didn't care. One spring/summer I averaged 4 days a week on the water. Man I wish I had that much time now. Tried to study out at the lake - wrong idea!!! Best advice, get something roomy enough to take friends, and something you don't mind working on. Don't worry about flashy paint jobs or $$$ motors. That will come later. I learned alot with that ol' boat. 1965 Hallet V-drive with a stock 350. Weather its a v-drive or jet, just make sure you USE IT & HAVE FUN!!!
Oh, I also saw a 19' spectra in boattrader for $5k about a month ago. looked REALLy nice too. Exactly like you described.

This might be a little much for you, but maybe someone else might like it. I'm sure he'll take $6300 for it.
Boat belongs to my brother. Very clean ride. Trying to give him a little help advertising and provide a nice ride for a forum member.
460 Ford freshened 2 Winters ago, has 2 summers on it. We're estimating 30-40 hrs max. on new Comp Cam and lifters (530 lift, 230 dur @ .050), valve job with new guides, Honed cylinders, new rings, bearings, double roller timing chain, dual point Mallory Ignition. Has New interior and carpet. New Autometer Gauges. Nice Competitive double axel trailer. Always garaged. $7000 obo.
You can PM me or Phone 559-625-3281. Boat is located in Visalia, CA (Central Valley)

Duke- Disco's boat is probably your best bet. It is super clean and a hell of a deal at the price. My friend aslo has a 19 ft. Hallet with a 454 with dual carbs and a Jacuzzi pump. Extra clean boat. I'll find out his asking price.

I just got a little more motivated to sell, but 4300 is going to be low. At 4300, you're probably going to be looking at doing some work. However, my boat is turn key. A number of people on these boards have ridden on my boat, and it really needs nothing, they will tell you. Thank you all for the kind words. I appreciate it. You guys are the coolest. If you LA people want to see the boat, it'll be at the Long Beach Hot Rod Swap Meet on Sunday the 9th.
If you get a 4300 boat, how much more are you going to spend? What if the pump ends up being junk? There's 800 right there. Interior? 2000 Dead heads? I've been watching the used boat market, and there are good deals in the 4000-5000 range, but be very careful, cause there are a lot of boats in that price range I wouldn't pay 2000 for. Hack Job has a nice boat for sale in the 4000 range. My only gripes about it is it's only got two seats, and I'm not a Ford guy (but the Ford thing is preference). If you're only going to use it as a play boat, it would be a good choice too.

no hard feelings I'm assuming that you are talking to me. I'm sorry you found my post rude. I was offering my advice on what to look for in the $4000 range. I was just pointing out the expensive things that can be bad on a boat in that price range. Whatever. As for this boat, this is a sweet deal. $6300 would be a steal. I think that the Hack Job's 19' Eliminator Bubble that's on the boards would be a really good deal too and is right in your price range. I'll stop offering advice that you asked for since I'm "rude".

Discoactully.. your right... it was advice, just not the kind i was looking for, thanks tho'
i have a guy that im gonna take with me to check out the jet boat/s if im interested, that way i dont get stuck with something im gonna have to invest a lot in, like your example: a bad jet drive
its just, i dont think i got the cash flow and im just looking for something i can cruise around in and just have fun.. your boat is actully one of my fav's so far but, i dont know if i could get that much saved up.
plus, its a great time in the market so i'll just look around
like i said in an earlier post i found a '78 bubbe deck southwind, white with blue, i dont know how much it seats(gonna call for that) but its got pretty much everything i need... 460 bbf, berkley jet, the gel looks really good.. and to top it off the boats only 20 minutes from my house
oh yea, he's asking $3800
thanks for ALL the advice guys
duke
p.s. should i make a new topic to try an get info on southwind hulls or just ask in here?

A few weeks ago Eric455 and I ran into a guy at Pyramid. He told us his boat was a Southwind bubble deck. It looked a lot like Erics' T except for the bow deck, so maybe they did make one. But then again what do I know. The seller told me my '77 Hallett was a sail boat. I still can't figure out where the mast goes.
 :D Good luck in your search Duke.

If you can scrape together 5,500 my buddy has a sweet hallet with a BBC. Disco was not being rude. He is just trying to save you from going through the aggravation a lot of guys go through when they buy a cheaper boat. Trust me. I paid 4,500 for my Hallet and I have put about 4,000 into her since.

hope this works.. here's a picture of the boat i'm looking at
i'm guessing its a JemCraft Southwind (considering the year it was built [1978])
(found some good info on southwinds on this board and the bonderlogs)

Duke,
The boat looks good from where I am sitting. Did you say you have seen it in person? Check the boat out very thoroughly. Remember, OT headers can be hazordous to your health. They can get real hot just sitting in the sun. Ask Eric. :D If you are planning on pulling skiers, well you can see where I am going with this. TT headers are just my personal preference. Think about how you will be using your boat. Keep us posted.

i was actully thinking the same thing, i would eventully try to swap out the ot headers for tt and if i could i'd like to actully get an engine cover on it.
i think im gonna go see it sometime next week. i gotta call the guy.
Just wondering if any of you guys could join me sometime next week? the boats in sunland. i'll get back as to when and where if anyone's interested

Duke- Looks like a fairly clean boat but a picture is only worth so much. Go look for yourself with someone who knows what to look for. Make sure before any cash is exchanged that you hook water to it and fire it. If the owner is in to it take a day and go somewhere and put it in the water. It is always good to demo a boat before you buy it. Offer to pay for the gas and throw the guy some deposit $ to let him know you are serious. This is a big investment for someone at your age and we wouldn't want to see you get stuck not boating next summer because you have to pour a ton of cash into it.
Find out what model pump it has?
Look closely for stress cracks on the hull and for dry rot on the stringers.
Assess interior condition-sunbeaten, faded and cracked or clean and tearfree. (int. is a bout 2,000 to replace)
Is it gelcoated or painted-condition?
When, if ever has the motor or pump been rebuilt?
Don't buy the first thing you see without doing some investigation.
