How much is too much? I had 85psi @ idle and 80psi while under load(before the bearings spun). People have tld me that is too much. Is this true? If so what do I need to do to fix it? I have a stock melling pump with a 10qt pan(455 olds).

A little higher than normal (hot)(not cold). High pressure can be caused by a number of things but could be from too little bearing clearance which could also explain why they spun.

396, Mondello has an article on his website that says max oil pressure at cold should be 70 lbs.

What were your clearances on your mains and rods when you put it together?
Does anyone have experience with plasti-gage. Someone told me that you don't get and accurate reading if you don't put a drop of oil on it. He said oil allows it to smash better giving a more accurate reading. I did mine dry and got main clearances of .004-.005. My machinist said to subtract about .0005-.00075 which is 1/2 - 3/4 of a thousandth because if I would have used oil it would have smash more and showed tighter clearances. Thanks.

I had .0020 on the rods and .0030 on my rods. I am still wondering what could have caused such high oil pressure   Everything was new inside
