Ok guys, just bought my first boat. It's a 1978 Bahner 19 footer. It has a 454 and berkeley pump with a new place diverter. I was wanting to know how to identify which pump it actually has Jc,Jg etc. Any help would be appreciated.By the way i have learned alot from the forums as I have been reading for about 2 months now.TANK. :D :D :D

Tank,
I know that on my pump there is a plate with a serial number and the model stamped into it (jc). It is located just in front of the hand hole right behind the grease fitting. You may want to look there.

Oh by the way I gave you five stars. Anyone who is willing to ask questions and learn here is a 5 star member in my book.

Miller is correct. The plate in front of the hand hole cover will tell you what pump you have and what impeller it came with. Most are A impellers.
mine reads 12JG-A which is a JG pump with A-impeller.

Can anyone give me the cliff notes version or point me in the direction of some good information on the advantages and disadvantages of the different models?

miller19 is right about the "A" stamp, however,
if the pump has been rebuilt, it could be different.

"I was wanting to know how to identify which pump it actually has Jc,Jg etc"
The JC Berkeley has an intake that goes through the bottom of the boat and the throat of it is all metal. The pump then bolts down to the intake with 10 5/16 bolts. The hand hole cover is usually inside the boat, unless it is a set back installation.

Sorry I hit a wrong button and posted before I was through.
The JG Berkeley is the same as the JC, except that it has a split (two piece bowl).
The JE Berkeley is an insert pump. It bolts up against the back of the boat and the front half of the throat is the fiberglass insert put in the hull. (no seperate intake). The hand hole clean out cover is always outside of the back of the boat.
The JF Berkeley is the same as the JE, except that it came out with a Jetavator trim on it.

from what i've been told, the JG bowl has longer veins in the bowl and is supposedly better for some reason. not sure why exactly.

actually...
Accross the board, C bowls have longer vanes than Gs. The older G and B bowls stopped the vanes right before or even with the flange for the steering adapter. The newer G bolws actually carry the vane past the steering adapter flange. C bowls carry the vanes right up to the nozzle socket which would make them as long or longer than the newer G or I bowls. Will you, me or any other 500-600hp guys notice the difference.... probably not. But in theory the longer vanes should keep the thrust straighter thus allowing more of the thrust to move the boat rather than waste kinetic energy swirling away.
