What is the diffrence between the early 460 and the new one's? What year are the good ones and why?

the earlier blocks have thicker walls and can be bored .100 overeasily.newer blocks about 30 over is max.The earlier dove blocks have lower deck heights compared to later.
As for heads the earlier 68-72 are best for hop ups as far as valve train goes and have smaller combustion chambers 73-75cc compared to 95cc(?).
If you plan on a stroker motor the earlier block is the way to go wheter it is 460 or 429.the only difference between the two is the crank and pistons to compensate for stroke 3.59 (429)and3.85 for the 460.rods are the same

another thing the truck motor has the better rods copared to a car motor the truck rods are the same as the scj rods.
any way if all you can find is a car motor it will be plenty strong for up to 5500 rpm.this i know for a fact.

I have car rods in my back up motor. Hate to say it but its has been in the boat for 2 years.
Run it hard all the time and all 8 are still in the motor hahaha. The 429 spins up faster and is only 200 RPM down from the 460. Heads are were the
power is so spend some money on good ones.
Not sure were you live but I have lots of BBF parts if you need any let me know.

460s made after 1978 are all externally balanced. You cannot interchange rotating parts without rebalancing. Flywheels/flexplates also are not interchangable. I also have run the pass. car rods and never had any problems with them but I held my breath every time I spun it above 6K.

058, What do you mean by "externally balanced"

the reason it is cheap is i do my own labor!!

AntRant:
058, What do you mean by "externally balanced"External balance [or Detroit balance] is when the factory places some of the counter weight on the outside of the engine such as the flex plate/flywheel and or the harmonic balancer. 429/460s from 1968 thru 1978 are all internally balanced. The flywheel/flexplate has no extra balance weights on it.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>I have heard of guys running those stock broached rods with stock bolts to 7K but you would never catch me doing anything like that. :D :D :D

So would a 97' 460 be able to except a early 70's heads, intake, u-jount thing (connects jet to engine), engine mounts, ect ???

Hey Antrant they should fit but I would not swear to that. You should check your push rod length you to make sure the valve geometry are correct. If nobody else can give you a definite answer here you may ask on this question on this board here good luck.http://www.network54.com/Forum/85220

I HAD CAR RODS IN MY 460 AND ONE OF THE RODS HAD A BAD CASTING. IT CAME APART AND SCRAPPED MY MOTOR .SO I AM STARTING ALL OVER AGAIN WITH A NEW BLOCK ( '68 MODEL) BORE .30 OVER AND "O RING THE CYL." TO ADD AN EXTERNALY BALENCED MOTOR HAS A DIFFRENT FLYWHEEL AND A WEIGHT ON THE FRONT OF THE CRANK (BEHIND THE HARMONIC BALLANCER).
