Are you going to be out on the water this weekend? I'm trying to decide where to go tomorrow, because Sunday will be at Lake Hogan.

This is my FISHING boat - a Gator Jet. It causes quite a commotion during tournament blast-offs. Gave a competitor a free "facial enema" the other day trying to pass me! http://www.bassboatcentral.com/images/Roostertail.jpg

I'm gonna go left a little here in this thread. By all means...keep posting the roosters!
W/ the V drive positioning thread in the v drive forum just made me think about the propulsion of the jet w/ a rooster tail.
Why is it that w/ the rooster tail (water from jet) so high up that the boat continues to move the boat forward still at a high rate of speed even though the water from the jet is so dispersed that by the time it enters back into the lake and is no longer a stream? Is it just the momentum/thrust of the water coming from the nozzle that moves the boat forward. It seems like it is only pushing air (not pushing into the water/lake).
Just a thought provoking question. :D

Mike, the force isn't from water pushing on air. It comes from the acceleration of water mass out the business end. All that f=ma boring physics and numbers crap. Even if jet boating a vacuum on the moon, still the same thrust...more like a rocket, as I posted in hp vs Q?
So once the water leaves the nozzle, the boat no longer cares what happens to it. It can fall to the lake, evaporate into a freakin' rain cloud, or circle the moon eternally for all it cares. Long done with it and of no further use. Cast aside like an old shoe. (flashbacks of my x speaking here) As for the angle, yep, anything other than the direction you're moving, you loose thrust. No big mystery. However, some forward thrust traded for hull lift (less water friction) can also give more speed...a trade-off
If not that, then at least some cool a** pics :)
Here's a picture from my last trip to the moon compliments of NASA and the Howard Hughes Corporation:
http://users.lvcm.com/lvjetboy/MoonRoost.gif
Can you imagine roosting the moon?

Jer, I been messin w/ the photoshop program a little bit too lately cause all the funny pic's on the board.
With the weight of your boat being approx 300#s on the moon, and if there was water to be thrown from the jet, what kind of speed could be obtained (not sure if the tunnel would work on the moon wink )? Do you think the speed would be the same seeing how the water would only weigh about .6#s?

Mike,
I'm thinking thrust nearly the same as it depends on water mass not weight. But those NASA supplied air bottles feeding the engine pretty heavy. Likely more than offset by hull "moon" weight as you mentioned. All in all, my speed was WAY higher, at least 7200 rpm! Imagine that? Made it across Serendipity in no time. Not sure how fast I was going? (my gps wouldn't lock) but felt really good...
So I'm sure, really really fast no doubt
And moondust's a bitch on pump's. At least it wasn't a prop, that'd REALLY suck. Maybe next time I'll use another gear or two. Oh ya and BTW, that boat's for sale :)

:D There is no way that he was laughing, if he was he was lying. I have done that ONCE when I was pretty messed up, and let me tell you no amount of booze would have dampened the pain of those golf balls comming at you around 60mph. I thought it would be fun.
