What causes the advance to burn the headers? So just unplug it, cap the carb outlet and thats it? Should I take it off the distributor and silicone the notch in the housing closed, or should I leave it on because it is holding something in position in there? Just wondering.

The only advantage is you don't burn you headers, thats it.... leave it in there and just unplug it and cap it off.
The headers burn because at part throttle the distributer advances and creats hotter exhaust gasses (if your headders arnt chrome don't worry about it)

And make sure you are running the lightest springs with the heaviest weights in your HEI to get all the advance in by like 2800RPM.
