Just spent the day at Westech. Man, what an exciting day. My motor is finally done and I am truly impressed by the amount of hrsepower and torque that my engine put out. I just want to thank Dave from DNE for the experience and for building me an awesome engine. For those of you that do not know Dave, he is truly a professional. My motor is a 540 CI Chevy. It dyno'ed at over 630 Horsepower. Don't ask me anything about the motor please, refer all questions to DNE if you really want to know. All I can say is that you get what you pay for.

A 540 that only made 630 hp??? wtf didn't they have the "magazine article correction factor" loaded into the dyno??? :D :D :D :p
It is very nice piece thou, are those the headers you are going to use?? Congrats and have fun with it. :)

HBjet I was kinda hopen you could enlighten us bout a smaller motor making more hp? :D

my guess would be different strokes for different folks :) (no pun intended)
As everyone here is aware, the application for the motor dictates certain characteristics. Perhaps a certain idle quality or torque curve was specified? Maybe Novaguy gave Dave a list of requirements for the motor and one of them was to make just over 600hp? Maybe he wanted to use the motor on Lake Powell and had an 87 octane requirement? Maybe he wanted to use a flat tappet hydraulic cam? The list goes on and on and as long as the owner is happy with the results, thats all that matters.
I noticed something has happened to a lot of us on the boards over the last year or so. Our expectations for our setups have risen considerably and maybe to a somewhat inflated point. I can remember 2 years ago thinking, "a single carb pump gas deal making 550hp would be fine". Now we've got guys running over 700HP and the perceived "normal" level of HP has risen. So have "acceptable" speeds to some extent. I can remember when I would have been happy if my 21' pump driven daycruiser would hit 60mph with cool air. Am I happy with that result out of my current setup at this point? No Way. Let's think about it real quick, this guy's motor is making 630HP (and if I had to guess, probably around 5400RPM). That's getting close to DOUBLE the amount of power out of a brick stock single carb 7.4 from Mercruiser. Time for a reality check here, 630HP from a pump gas single carb setup is a good number, yes there are hotter setups if you want to spend more, make sacrices in certain areas of performance or hull selection, opt for a higher maintence schedule and associated replacent costs for the parts which will wear. In the end it comes back to Nova Guy setting a list of expectations, and if that 630HP fufills his expectations then he did the best he could hope to do and I say good job to all parties involved!

We don't need to go down this road again, you don't believe it, but it really doesn't matter to me, since I'm out there running the thing, and so far it hasn't let me down...
I was just curious as to why you would make such a comment... oh wait, you know everything.
Care to guess what cam is in that 540?

I won't bother quoting Flatbroke's post due to it's length, but I agree completely.
The one thing that occurs to me is that performance/horsepower and engine longevity are always a tradeoff even when the utmost care and best parts are used. I like going fast just as much as the next guy but I (and my lowly budget) can't afford too much horsepower. The accelerated wear put on engine components whether it be valve springs, pistons/rings, bearings etc. are all factors in my hp goal being a rather conservative 500.
Not that I'd want to see anything bad happen to the guys that opted for more ponies, but I'll be curious to see how well they hold up and how much routine maintenance and freshening up they require. It will definitely influence my next build one way or the other (hopefully a good 5 years down the road).
Thanks for sharing the info NG and others.

Squirtcha, I couldn't agree with you more. I wanted a motor that will last a long time with very little maintenance but still make a lot of power. That is why I went with a professional builder. I ended up spending more then I planned, but I also got more motor then I planned. When building this motor, my goal was to have this motor last 5 years without any issues, and just regular maintenance. So, in 5 years, I'll let you know how its doing and we'll see if I got what I wanted.

Very nice motor Nova Guy. Does anybody care to share what these set ups cost you. Just Wondering thats all. Will Dave work with any Block, any heads, that you might prefer?? Thanks,

Thank you all for your responses and compliments. If you are wondering why the motor only put out 630 HP, it's because that is the range that I wanted. When my boat got stolen, I had to decide whether I wanted a stock 454 Indmar 330 HP motor like I had, or have a motor built for around the same price that makes double the horspower. I had met Dave from DNE when I had my pump done by Jack at MPD. I was impressed by his knowledge and professionalism. Dave runs a clean shop and has a lot of experience. Well, my decision was fairly easy. I chose Dave because of the above. Keep in mind, I have a 21' Eliminator Mojave. It is a heavy deep v hull. I have a family and wanted to use the boat for my family and water skiing. I know that the motor will be reliable and have plenty of horsepower for what I want to do. I chose a 540 CI block in case I wanted to add more horsepower later. With the internal parts I have in it, it will be easy to do. Hope to see you gus in the water soon....it's been almost a year since my boat was stolen and I haven't been to the river at all. BTW, I finally took my boat out of D&S Interior in El Cajon. I took it to Paul Stratton and he will have it done this week. I can't believe that it's taking Paul a week to do the job and D&S had my boat for 6 months.

Nice looking interior NG. Is that the same as stock, or did you have them update it with the drink holder cutouts, etc?
Can't wait to see it finished. Maybe we can meet up at a local lake verses running into each other at Del Taco in Barstow!

HBjet Now that's some funny shit!!! That is the best Del Taco... The interior is updated. It had that pearl white with reds, burg and orange. Froggy designed it with the recessed cup holders. They actually messed up and put 2 cup holders in the back. My speaker needs to fit in there so they are doing it over. I will have 2 cup holders up front and 1 in the back for each side. I am having red LED lights installed and in the front bulkhead I have 2 10" kappas with white led lights. It's gonna look cool, and I can't wait. I hope I could go for one trip at least this year. Someone asked about headers earlier...I'm having Lightning headers installed.

Hey Novaguy, am new to the forums, but wanted to say congrats on your engine. Also was wondering if you might post some pics of finished interior. something like that would look awesome in my Sleekcraft project.
Thanks,

Hey thanks for the compliments guys. It's been a long year without my boat and I am excited to finally nearing the completion of the project. I will be posting new completed interior pics shortly. Once again, thanks all for the compliments. Sometimes I wonder if it is all even worth it....
