I'm getting close to putting in my pump. I was just out cleaning up the transom. The last few times it was put on with silicone (a couple layers of clear and the last one blue yuk ). I have scraped off all I can, could I put some gas or something on a rag and get the rest off?
Also, what kinds of stuff are you using to seal the transom adapter when you put it back on?
Thanks,

MAN I TRYED IT ALL, I THINK IT DEPENDS ON THE SILICONE. SOMTIMES GAS WORKS, SOMTIMES CARB CLEANER, SOMETIMES WD40 AND SOMTIMES NOTHING. I GET AS CLEAN AS POSSIBLE AND TAKE MY NEW SILICONE AND RUN A BEAD ON ONE OF MY CUT OFFS TO SEE IF IT WILL STICK. IF IT DOES I SEALER UP. IF IT DOES NOT I TRY A DIFFERENT SILICONE. THATS MY 2 CENTS.

Professional strength Goof Off is hands down the best thing I've ever used. It turns the silicone into a mush that you just wipe off. After that, wipe the area clean with denatured alcolhol.

Well, I tried gas. It helped some. It would take off the real light stuff and weaken the bond of the thicker stuff. I dug through my junk and found a razor blade scraper. That seemed to work the best when I got down to the gel. Boy, that adapter has been off a dozen times! :D
Thanks for all the input guys,

USE SOME BRAKE CLEANER BUT DONT LET IT STAY ON THE PAINT LONG,JUST GET THE CRAP OFF THEN WASH OFF THE AREA .. :D

I have had great sucess using "Prepsol". The stuff you use to remove all the wax and other crap that gets into the pores of the surface you are about to paint. It will break down MOST silicone based waxes, and seems to break the bond to the surface of RTV type sealers, allowing removal in large pieces. And then there is the rubbing method...........Moneypitt

I FORGOT TO ADD I USED A RED SCRATCH PAD TYPE GASKET REMOVEL WHEEL ON MY DIGRINDER. JUST DONT LET IT GET ON THE VISIBLE SURFACES. IT TAKES THE JUNK OFF IN A HURRY BUT WILL DIG INTO GELLCOAT JUST AS QUICKLY. PRACTICE ON A NON SEEN AREA.

Acetone ,Lacquer thinner or Mek will soften it on gel....If paint you can use 3m's general purpouse adhesive cleaner ...pic below....or Go to an autobody supply store and pick up a product called stripe eraser...It is basically a soft rubber wheel that mounts in a slow air or electric drill and rubs vinyl, decals and adhesives off paint or gel without damaging the surface ...saving the skin on your thumbs ...pic below ....buy a couple ...they wear out quickly ...they last longest at a slower speed!

Malcolm,
Do you have kids? If you do, offer them $10.00 to do it while you kick back and have a beer.
Sounds pretty easy to me :)

Cas, I have a 5 yr old girl. She would've liked to have helped, but she had to sit a watch. :D
What do you use to glue it back on?

I just use a clear silicon, nothing special, and haven't ever had any leaks....crap, I probably just jinxed myself.
5yrs old huh? cute age :)

Tell the bitch to get her tits off of the boat!
oops, wrong kind(right kind?) of silicone. GE now makes a SILICONE SOLVENT! Just for cleanup! Its still hard to find, but call around,(maybe GE?). I understand that the "Beautify Lake Havasu" committee is trying to outlaw its use at the beaches. TIMMINATOR

Actually LOOKED at the can of gasket remover today, its Permatex brand. Also sorry my sense of humor detector was inoperative.

Not sure how it might react with the boat or if it would even work as I have never used it but Dap make a silicone caulk remover. You can find it at Lowes or home depot, in the paint dept. It is a small tude around 8-10 ounces. I belive you put it on let it set for a while then maybe wipe it off. Like I said I've never used it so good luck.

Hey Malcolm, Like Cas suggested just a plain ole can of Goof off will get it. Used this stuff plenty and it works every time. Just make sure ya wipe the area off afterward with some alcohol and you'll be good to go

Malcolm,
The way I've always done it is the way your are, with a razor blade and then with a rag soaked with acetone.
Are your running a stock pump with no set back? If you are, then you don't need to use silicone on the TA. Silicone the rubber gasket to the TA and let it dry. Coat the big O ring on the bowl with white grease and also coat the clean side of the TA gasket with the same grease. Assemble the the thing back together like this, wipe away the excess grease. It'll never leak, and it's a breeze to take apart next time.
Silicone is never needed when installing a stock set up (except when sticking the gasket to the TA), only when you're messing with a set pack pump do you have to use it.

The only problem is this is a WJ, from what I hear they dont use a gasket on the TA.

Malcolm is that an oil pan I see through the transom?

malcolm
06-30-2003, 09:37 PM
Yup, that's an 8 quart pan I picked up from NelsonF on Banderlog. It was the biggest pan I could use with the 3 point mounts.

I thought so, I am still not sure what I have a 3 point mount or 4 point mount, what is the difference?

malcolm
06-30-2003, 09:52 PM
3 point uses car mounts on the sides of the block, 4 point uses aluminum plates front and back.

OK, here's the first look at my boat's new shiny ass. :D

In that case I have a 3 point mount with 10 qt oil pan, believe it or not..I modified the front crossmember by lowering it and rewelding the crossmember,,works really good. How did you get the crap off the transom. I will be doing that tomorrow along with preping the intake for the pump.

I used a little razor blade scraper mostly. I didn't have any of that other stuff everyone mentioned at home, so I used gas to soften the silicone.

Cool thanks, I have my work cut out for me tomorrow. I am just wondering why everyone does not modify the mounts in the 3 point setup to accomidate a larger pan,,,just curious.....Hey I was at your home page did you ever switch to a "A" impeller or are you still running a "B"?

malcolm
07-01-2003, 08:20 AM
Stickin' with the B because of the small block. I didn't want to mess with my crossmember, I'll do it if I ever put a big block in there.

The pan's drain is in the rear to the left. You can see it in the pic. It will still be fun to drain I'll bet, but aren't boats always impossible to drain. :D
