If he goes for a Daycruiser, 24'-26' he will have plenty of seating room plus a place for the kids to play and nap down below, also room for porta-potty and place to change clothes, even overnighters, and when it's put away for the season the kids have a playhouse. Sleekcraft, Hawaiian,Spectra, and others had big jets until the mid 80's. search Boat Trader online and ebay keyword daycruiser, I feel they are the most versatile design especially for a family,

I concur. I have a 21' Kachina Lazer, which is an open bow, covered engine jet, with a sleek, low profile mini-daycruiser profile. I routinely (and I mean every weekend) have 4 adults, a 13, 11, 8, 6, and 5 year old in it (yes, that's 9 bodies), at the same time, tubing and waterskiing and everything else. All on a SBC 350 that doesn't even break the bank on gas. I don't know how it does it, but it's the greatest jetboat I've ever owned. Here's a pic (if I posted it correctly). It looks much more sleek and flat in the water, scanning it somehow changed the aspect ratio a bit and made it look a bit "plump".

if you want a great family boat, Id say a older daycruiser. I have a SKV, it has a deep sidewall, but its not a deep v. It has a runner bottom and is very shallow. Its not a wahoo boat but i cruise about 40-45. Its great, i have 3 little ones and its a safe boat. I grew up with a SKv and now i have one. Its a project boat but its getting there!. It starts everytime and it floats lol. http://www.***boat.com/image_center/data/520/928DCP_0517.JPG http://www.***boat.com/image_center/data/520/928DCP_0535.JPG http://www.***boat.com/image_center/data/520/928DCP_0537.JPG http://www.***boat.com/image_center/data/520/928DCP_0528.JPG

Open bows can carry more people but a good closed bow like a Spectra20 can carry more stuff. One of things I hated about having an Open bow was that everyone of my PWC buddies would give that, "Hey bro, you got room to take my ice chest up to the sand bar with you?" Then they plop it down on the seats, sandy and all (Doesn't anyone have the where with all to at least dunk it in the water and the get the sand off first? ). The next thing you know, everyone riding with you is having to step over extra chairs, ice chests and shit. A Spectra20 can fit a small refugee family under the deck and the people riding with you can be confortable.

SabreJet 76

I picked up a 21' Daycruiser last year. We had been running aournd in my buddies 18-footer, till his boat went to Chico with his nephew. Found the 76 SabreJet for $4500. It has room for 4 adults, 2 12-year-olds, and 2 dogs. All the junk fits up under the bow. In my buddies boat, we were packed to the gills until we found a beach. Now, we don't have to unpack if we don't want to. Ofcourse, the Sabrejet's 460 gets thirst, and has 2-20 gallon tanks. Friends 18-footer had a 350 and ran at least as far on 25 or 30 gallons. SabreJet rides smother with exra weight and modified vee instead of flat bottom. Also worry less about wakeboarder or cruiser swamping boat than in my friend 18-foot. SabreJet does about 50 at 5000rpm with stock Berkely Pakajet (460HP, A impeller). You can check out some photos of it in action at http://www.***boat.com/image_center/showgallery.php?ppuser=1086&cat=500
Be patient, look around, and check out the boats at the vintage jet boat web site.
