I know this is a dumb question but did you pull the plugs out of the fitting holes?
Did you prime it first?
I installed one a couple of years ago and haven't have any problems at all.

On a BBC, I think it is possible to bolt the pump down and not have the push rod against the pump arm, if you force it. Trick is to use wheel bearing grease to hold the push rod up in the hole. Another idea is that you have the inlet and outlet reversed, since the lower housing can be rotated on most Holley pumps. Adn finally, one or more of the check valves inside the pump could be stuck. You should not be able to blow through the outlet side of the pump, or suck through the inlet side. If ou can do either, then the littel valves are stuck.
Good Luck!

Hay Man, I did have the same problem but twice as bad because I have a Holly red for motor and Holly black for my NOS. The issue is two things
#1 The pump needs to be mounted as low as possible
#2 You must take the anti siphin valves out of the tank fitting and go with a traditional 90, because the pump will not suck fuel but pushes it.
This will solve your problems for good, It did for me.

What kind of pump. Mech or electric? Its always a good idea to fire it up after you make any changes to your set up. Hope you got it going. :)

OOOPS
Didnt realize you were talking about a mech. fuel pump. I was refering to electric. But you still may have a problem with the anti-siphin valves in the tanks
Sorry Good luck

NO I HAVNT FIXED IT YET ,WHY SHOULD YOU HAVE TO PRIME IT ,IVE RAN OUT OF GAS WITH THE OLD PUMP AND JUST PUT MORE GAS IN IT AND IT WORKED.IS THERE SOMETHING DIFFERENT ABOUT THE HOLLEY.I DID PUT MY FINGER ON THE INLET AND TURNED IT OVER AND IT DIDNT FEEL LIKE I WAS GETTING ANY SUCTION.I DONT KNOW I THINK MAYBE I GOT A DEFECTIVE PUMP MAYBE I SHOULD PUT ON AN ELECTRIC PUMP WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK????????

I would check that first! I`v never seen one that wouldn't pump at all unless you had the rod on the side of the arm.

Dumb question but did you check the flow direction?
I installed a Clay Smith pump once and didn't notice the little flow arrow (old eyes) had to flip the base around to match my fuel lines. Worked great then, it is the same basic design as the Holly. :D

I'm thinkin on that pump you mighta got a small block by mistake and the arm isn't as long but it would still bolt on the big block I think but not engage. Just a thought.

YOU KNOW I CAN REMEMBER THAT THE NUMBERS ON THE PUMP DID HAVE A 454 IN THEM AND THAT WAS MAKING ME THINK IT WAS THE RIGHT ONE .... If it had a 454 in it it would be correct, like
12-454 or 12-454-1 or 12-454-2 or 712-454-2, you get the jist. Did it bolt on easily or did you have to force anything when you bolted it down to the block?

NO IT WAS VERY EASY..

77468sleekcraft:
NO IT WAS VERY EASY.. So I take that as that you had no problem getting the fuel pump pushrod to stay up in it's hole while you installed the fuel pump.
Did you check the in and out markings on the pump housing to make sure you have the in to the in and the out to the out correctly? These pumps bodies can be rotated 180ยบ and that is a possibility.

I know it's pretty basic. Usually problems like this turn out to be something pretty basic though. You may have just got that one in a thousand bad pump too. Good luck with it. :)

Short arm sounds like a small block pump. was the number you seen on the box or pump. Also occationally you will have to prime a new pump the first time. Even when you run out of fuel the pump is not completely dry like a new pump. Just losen the connection to the carb and direct the hose to a empty pop bottle while cranking over the engine.

BBC pump arm is 1 3/4" out from the body while the SBC arm is 1 1/4"

The pic posted by Jet Hydro is exactly like the one I put in mine last year with no problem. The part # like you said had 454 in the middle. No part # on the pump itself. Always the possibility that the wrong pump was in the box with the right #.

I think you'll be more than happy with the Holley mechanical. Remember the K.I.S.S. principle.
You just need to get the right one.

Ive got an electric on mine, its just a little holley red, Ill need to change it out for a bigger one, but it has worked very well for me. I have heard that they can die though, so keep a mechanical with you just in case.
