I just pulled down my 514 to freshen it up and encountered a lot of sand in the block and logs and heads. Has anyone ever tried an inline sand filter in the line from the jet to the engine? I realize that it would have to be maintained after every outing but am I missing a serious down side?

I know a couple of guys on the Banderlog boards were running McMaster Carr sourced strainers. Personally I've been deliberating running a full blown sea strainer typ device to try and catch some of the crap in the water because the 1st stop after the pump is my oil cooler. It'd be interesting to hear others thoughts on this and maybe some input from the prop owning lurkers as to what types and amounts of debris they find in their strainers to give us an idea of what we may be passing through our motors.

There was a thread a while back in "just jets" called sand in block. Don't know how to post old threads on a new one, but just found it on page 5.

Seems like a good idea too me.

I installed a Groco raw water strainer (see pic). It is a bronze body, lexan bowl and stainless mesh. It was a fraction of the cost of the ones offered by CP Performance (the ultimate). Check them out at groco.net. If you want the ultimate check out cpperformance.com

Somebody's been holding out on us. :) It's off topic, but lets see some more pics of your setup ttmott.
Nice looking setup from what the one pic shows. Any specs and numbers?

I used a strainer (don't know what brand) for awhile, but found if I sucked up some sand and crap, even for just a second, it filled the strainer up and just blew it threw into the engine anyhows. It was about a 1 quart drop type filter in a glass housing with a drain valve at the bottom.
I just ended up removing it. Now I just remove all the petcocks once a year and poke a wire in them while running it to blow all the crap out. Never had a problem with it overheating, I just like to clean some of the crap out.
BTW, nice mill ttmott.

Install 1/4npt tees in your block drains and route water into bottom of block on the branch side of the tee and install drains on the run side of the tee,
Source your water from a crossover like the one in my avatar. Or, splice into your water inlet system.
This approach will provide sand build-up protection for you block.
For those of you with manifolds....well, that's another story, have to think on that one. Oh yea, sand filter.
I know it's difficult at times, but try not to idle your boat in less than waist-deep water.

My situation on the strainer is a little different as I am concerned about sand and crap in the intercooler and the engine cooling heat exchanger (closed loop cooled). Thanks for the complements; not really one to flash my stuff only like to kick ass on the OB's. Oh, and I can do that - at any point on the go curve.
Boat is 73 Sleekcraft Kouai The engine is a 468 BBC roller, twin turbocharged intercooled. Two Holley 660 center squirters modified heavily. Pump is a Berk modified with Dominator 9.25 SST impeller and flowed bowl, droop, place, 6 degree shoe, ride plate, and pro loader. Everything is built and fabricated by yours truly. Horsepower at 1.25 bar is well over 900 and torque is 1000 lbft. Top end - unknown (currently in the mid 90's at 5100 rpm) Acceleration - unexplainable. Stability - like a rock. Girlfriend - whacked for really liking to ride in it.
