Just wondering if these heads are a good stock design. I want my BBC to rev to 6K RPM. I plan to install a COMP 280H cam. Intake is a torker 2. Casting # 353049. Saw on Mortec.com that these are 122cc chamber, and 255/119cc ports. Can any body translate these #s for me?
Thanks!

Those are some good heads. They were popular in late seventies trucks. They are one of the best "oval" port heads once you work the bowl area and the exhaust port. I have a set of these heads on a 454 pushing close to 550hp. They also respond well to bigger valves, I have the 2.19 intake and 1.88 ex. The 122cc is an open chamber head, 255 is the intake port size and 119 is the exhaust port size. You gotta work em a little to make work good.

If you can find a pair for less than $600. The oval ports make more torque at lower rpms than the rec. port. For a jet pump you need alot of torque. If you plan on spinning 6500+, yes the rec port is the better head. If you already have access to the 049's, their worth working over.

You and allot of other people have the same misconception that bigger is better. Not true at all. It was proven years ago that the large oval port heads up to 6000rpm will out perform a set of rectangular port heads at lower RPM due to there port design. The air flows at a higher velocity in a oval port than in a square port filling the cylinder more efficiently. At higher rpm less vacuum exists, and high air flow takes over necessitating a bigger port (rectangular). This takes around 5000RPM in a big block to be efficient, and worth it in most cases. And no I'm not saying rectangular port heads are bad, they are awesome in the correct application especially big HP and RPM.

I run 353049 heads on a 82 454 stock bore block with 10/1 com. pistons. I also run a high vol. oil pump and a 10 Qt. pan. The heads have been ported with brass guides. The cam is a Edelbock torker with a matching intake. The carb. is a holley 750 doulbe pumper. Will these heads work with my set up? If not what do I need to do? Thank for your help, itswild.

346236.....75-87...oval...OPEN...454, 120cc chamber, 225/116cc ports
There is a little more information on your heads. The ports seem a little smaller cc wise than some of the other casting numbers. Check out Mortec.com (http://www.mortec.com) for any other casting number questions you may have.

peanut port refers to the shape of the chamber,ie.
