440 feet deep at the dam, Lake Berryessa is spilling over. :D
Behold, Berryessa's famous "Glory Hole" in all its, uhm, glory:
http://www.***boat.com/image_center/data/506/350Glory_Hole_1-med.jpg
At about 30 feet accross, the Glory Hole can easily swallow a boat. This is a long way down! eek!

It's gonna be a great summer.

That freaking thing gave me goose bumps and chills. Has anyone ever.....you know, gone into the hole never to be seen again? How far down does it go? Are there warning bouys or anything around the area?

You definetly do NOT want to get too close to that hole..it will swallow you whole and not even belch. If by chance you were to survive the ride you would wind up somewhere far down stream from the dam. eek! eek!

Yes, of course there are safety buoys...look at the middle-right of the third photo (with the spillway overflow still above the water): you will see a "chain of logs" crossing the lake.
The shots of the Glory Hole spilling over were taken today, Sunday March 23, so you know that....
:D THIS IS GOING TO BE A GREAT SUMMER! :D

[/QB]I'm not sure it was the last but the Zodiac did attack a couple having a picnic or something. The girl was killed and the guy lived to give the police their best leads. I need to check that but I'm pretty sure that was the case.

WOW ! Some of the best sking on the lake is down by the damn . How could the lake be low if it's going over ? the Zodiac did strike at the lake , I think the prime suspect worked at a gas station in Santa Rosa but they never could find anything solid on him . That was a good book I didn't know he was so close to home.

Hey LakesOnly, where is a good palce to stay on the lake, thinking about a 3 day rental later this summer...Thanks. All the marinas have campsites. Also look at the photo above: Those cabins are being installed at every marina around the lake. They have plumbing, microwave and matresses--call the marina(s) for details:

I have a link on the Links page at www.laidbackboaters.com (http://www.laidbackboaters.com) with a listing of names, addresses and phone numbers of all the resorts at Berryessa. I'm liking those cabins :)

thats friggin scary lookin, did the engineers do that as a joke???
so thats the spillway for the dam huh??? is there then a tunnel that connects it downstream? wow, ive never seen that before, so what if the water gets so high that the "hole" cant handle it... is there a secondary spillway, or does it just go right over the dam???

Oldsquirt
03-24-2003, 05:49 PM
Jet4fun, if memory serves me, there is a secondary spillway on the dam. That hole is HUGE and I don't see it not being able to meet the flow. Only a handful of small streams feeding the lake. It is a rare year when the water reaches the top of the hole.
Hermosa, the marina in the pic is "Berryessa Marina". It is the second resort on Knoxville Road running up the west side of the lake, just past the day use area. Putah Creek Resort is the last resort on that side of the lake at the northwest corner. The "Bridge" is just before Putah Creek.

Anyone remember the Sheriff or Ranger boat being "sucked" down thru the hole in Folsom Damn (Northern Calif)about 5 or so years ago. Poor kids almost went with it! Completely trashed the boat and scared the hell of the kids! Im trying to find the old link on KCRA news, they actually caught it on film!

LO I gave the same picture to a person that owens a bar at LOTO by the name of The Glory Hole. I think the lip of the dam is 8 feet higher then the glory Hole. After the seven year drought in the 80's the lake was down 45 feet, and during one week of rain it filled to four feet over that Glory Hole, which produced the largest whirl pool you have ever seen. The picture showing the log cabin is at Lake Berryesa Marina and that road going to the ramp was under two feet of water.
