Be Excellent To Another
May 3rd, 2003 - Lake Mohave, NV - Cottonwood Cove Launch
A few more details........
Any number of boats can show up, but only 100 boats in the poker run since that is how many maps I have purchased to support the poker run. The maps will be pre-marked with the stops for the cards as well as the location of the event site. Each participating boat can purchase as many additional hands as we have cards layed out on the route.
Boats not participating in the poker run will be able to find the event site without a map, location will be clearly marked and visible for miles.
From a logistics point of view, Riverlife and I will be researching spots on lake mohave to support the poker run - then based upon "conditions" the actual spots will be determined and marked the day before the event. Each spot needs to be sandy to avoid prop damage, participants will be required to get out of their boat to collect the cards. A short "scavenger hunt/hike" will be involved for each spot, this will be a self guided self paced tour between the launch and the event site. No prize for fastest time.
At each spot, participants will eventually find two boxes, one containing sealed cards for the poker hand and the other containing sealed cards for the "kids hand". Most kids do not play poker, so we have another game for them to play.
The instructions for the poker run will be on one sheet of paper, following the instructions you should be able to find two additional ways to collect cards to better your hand, as draw cards. Some cards up and some cards down.
The kids hand will operate in the same mannor on the same route, just a differnet objective.
SO............
To support 100 boats requires:
- 100 maps, customized for the day of the event, yet reusable for additional events or kept by the participant
- 1 starting point for sign-up, map distribution, start time stamp
- 1 finish point for finish time stamp
- multiple spots along the route to be set-up with markers
- probably 300 poker cards per route spot, assuming two-three hands per boat (2100 cards in total)
- probably 100 kids cards per route spot (700 cards in total)
- 2800 small envelopes for the cards
- pre-determined time and location at the event site to play the hand
Resources equate to:
- multiple days on lake mohave for recon
- full day to setup the route day before the event
- Sign-in, 2 people from 7-9 AM
- Sign-in, 2 pepole from 9-11 AM
- Finish timestamp, 1 person from 9-11 AM
- Finish timestamp, 1 person from 11-1
- Play the hand at 1 PM, six people and tables/clipboards
- Post results at 2 PM at event site, two people
- Draw raffle winners, 3 people at 1:30 PM
At sing-in, we will require basic name and address information, liability waiver. No charge to attend the event, poker hands will have small cost, additional hands will have smaller cost - no charge for "kids hands" though kids over 16 not eligable for kids prizes.
This event has no budget other than contributions from individuals being time, funds and donations. We are striving to bring forward a very high quality and well thought out event, without encurring too many costs to ourselves or the participants.
The first 5$ of the first hand will go towards covering costs, the remaining amount going towards prize money.
SO......
The more boats attending and participating in the poker run, the larger the purse for the prize money.
Event involvement:
Each person on the producttion team will receive an embroidered t-shirt. This includes the designers, people working the event in one of the roles described above, as well as people who come out to represent a charity.
Charity involvement:
There are two primary objectives at play here:
- an organized outing providing a forum to get togehter, meet others and have some fun
- raise awareness for charities
You can get involved by bringing or being an official/unofficial representative for a charity. Being able to answer questions about the charity, its mission, and stuff... in casual conversations with other boating enthusiasts. From your charity, we need a minimum of 100 pieces of literature/brochure the represents the charity and provides contact information. We need a minimum of SEVEN charities, each providing 100 pieces of literature.
All of this is subject ot change, website to be updated this weekend.

a few good questions....
Why do we need seven charities?
What portion of the poker hand and raffle ticket costs go to the charities?
Can we make the first poker hand include a raffle ticket?
..........................
From a "literacure/brochure" standpoint we need a minumum of three, preferably five, or as many as seven charities. The literature will be used to support the poker run.
Raffle ticket included with "first hand", we can put anything into the "goodie bag" that is handed out to each boat/first hand.
As far as funds going towards charities, we can talk about the details in the next design meeting to be held in January.
Contributions:
- Raffle, 100% towards charities.
- Voluntary contributions, 100% towards a specific charity.
- Poker run, most going towards purse, winner can decide to keep or to donate.
Intention is to distribute the funds from the raffle evenly across all charities represented at the event.
Objective is to create awareness. Any funds collected are a bonus and hopefully any "contibutions" can be given directly to a charity representative. Do not want the logistics of collecting money.
Again, we do not want to spotlight any one charity nor force it down the throat of everyone attending. If you have a charity that you want to work with and bring attention towards - then get them there! Get some literature (100) to me for the poker run!
Thanks for your time, KC

KC, sounds like you guys are putting some serious thought into this...GREAT JOB. Just one question...Mojave is a big place - do you know about how many miles traveled will take place for this poker run? I've only got gas for 60 miles before needing to fill up. Willow Beach has gas, as does Cottonwood Cove and Katherines, but I'm not aware of any others.

The route for the poker run will be between Cottonwood Cove launch and the event site, Owl Point Cove. Probably eight miles, maybe as long as twelve miles. RiverLife and I will figure out and pre-run the route.
Unless things change, you'll need to be at the Cottonwood Cove Launch to sign-in and collect your map.
Late afternoon we are planning a run recreational run to the dam, after the drawings and playing of the hands.
I'll post pictures of the map on the website this weekend.
Hope that helps, KC

KC, sounds good. 8 miles huh? That's it? :) I won't even get to get her aired out. How 'bout some points up toward Willow Beach? It's nice scenery up there.

Keith...
I agree, a longer route would lead to very pretty country above Owl Point Cove.
Many people want to make the afternoon run to the dam, I'm trying to balance consumption of fuel for the poker route with enough remaining for the run to the dam. Additionally the time it takes to complete the poker route leaving enough time for drawings, playing the hand - and then the run to the dam.
Until we hand the "instructions" to a blind party and have them pre-run the route, we won't have a good feel for the time required. I hope to have the recon for the card spots and a dry run completed before the end of February.
We could set up a second "long course" for you guys driving wings with props in the water at mach 2!
I knew you would be looking for fuel! :)

So how long should I make the long coarse. Starting at Cottonwood Cove and ending near Owl Point Cove?
Less than 40 miles... KC

Personally, I can run ~60 miles on a tank. That's like from Cottonwood to Willow and back, once. I wouldn't mind if the poker run went from Cottonwood up the river toward Willow...maybe 10 or 15 miles, just so we could see some scenery, and get to put some distance from the dock.
I would imagine that I'm one of the more fuel limited boats as well.

I'm hoping to have time between the holidays to make a trip up to Lake Mohave. Take a few days to conduct recon and photos for the poker run route. Many options are being thought about regarding the poker run route, need time on the lake to work them out.
Keith, when are you going up to Mohave again?

If all goes well and my boat is back together this week as planned, I should be out there either this Sunday or next weekend (or both) doing break in.

We are working on insurance for the event, most of the charities that I have talked to require insurance for any type of motorized event.
The next design meeting will be in January, probably at the Irvine Spectrum.

Either that or the next one, 11-12. I'll know for sure in about a week. Cool?
You don't need your boat as long as you don't mind riding in the "rainbow warrior", as Jordy calls it. :D
