Im looking to have my bildge recoated. Its now black and it just looks blah. I'd like to keep it black. What type of product would i use to recoat it with? I pulled the carpet on each side of my engine and on the gas tanks out and im not gonna put it back. Im thinking about powdercoating my gas tanks silver.

Hey TM, I coated mine with aluminum. It cleans up really well and you can scrape it, sand it, weld it, even polish it if you're bored :boxed: . Just kidding, sorry, I couldn't resist. Your boat looks sweet, and no, I don't have any useful suggestions-Aluminum Squirt

I did the bilge of a jet I had with that roll on black truck bed liner. Looked awesome...covers all the "imperfections" too!!! Just an idea.

Kevin, I'll bet that the black you are seeing is gelcoat that was sprayed over a fairly rough final layer of glass. Just sand it and apply more. It can be brushed, rolled or sprayed. The level of finish is entirely up to you and the amount of prep you do. I think Squirtcha? did his that way. Might PM him.

Taylorman,
I've seen several boats that have had the bedliner put in, and it doesn't hold up too well. After time it begins to bubble & come loose. I think for some reason it doesnt stick well to fiberglass, or perhaps they just didn't prep it well before application.
I'd really suggest going with black gelcoat. it's easy to apply, and holds up well.

I powder coated my tanks two years ago and I am more than satisfied with the results! They were originally spun aluminum. I cleaned them up and sanded them lightly. Sent them to the coater. No problem! They weren't too $$$ either!

Taylorman, gel coat it. You can hide all of the minor imperfections with a polyester filler(Evercoat Rage works good), gel coat over that. When gel is sprayed it leaves quite a bit of orange peel. its a cool look I think. If you spray enough of it you can sand it down and polish it.

You're right....BUT degrease it well. Hot water and dish detergent. No acetone or anything like that, it won't CUT grease. Dry, and run over it with 36grit on a DA sander....the jet I did get's left in the water ALL summer for the last 9 seasons. Just replaced the heads on the mill in it and the guy dropped one and it didn't even chip it, after 9 years. If you PREP it right...it's just the opposite, it WON'T come out which can be just as bad if you wanna change it later, But it works great. You can also paint over it with Petit UniPoxy paint...make it any color you want.

I brushed gelcoat into mine. Here's a couple pictures.
At the time I wasn't setup to spray. Brushing leaves
some bristle marks behind, but not too bad.
It makes for a nice durable finish that's very easy to
keep clean. Just spray a little simple green (or similar
degreasing product) on it, and wipe it off with a rag.
I'm probably going to do it again in the next few weeks
since I've got the motor out again, but I'll spray it in this
time.
Here's the before.

Thanks Ern. Honestly.............if you get up close, you can see
some brush marks in it. It kinda keeps with my theme though.
My boat is a twenty footer..............it looks o.k. from twenty
feet away.
It is covered, and it is real easy to keep clean though. It has
served it's purpose.

I had painted mine originally. Got a little gas on it and it peeled.
That's when I went to the gelcoat. What kind of paint did you use?

I just used omni base and transtar clear. Of course the bilge was clean clean clean before puttting it done. I've spilled more then a good share of fuel and oil in the bilge and it just wipes right up with a little degreaser.

Well i got the motor out yesterday and all the engine rails out. Going to the fiberglass shop Wed. I was gonna just spray a fresh coat of gelcoat in the bildge but my stingers really need to be replaced so im gonna have them replaced also.

Thin, I mean like 22 gauge Stainless Steel sheet, spread 3M-5200 down, lay the Stainless on it, and ZAP-POW! Instant easily cleanable surface, forever. It worked for me. :skull:

There ya go. You're gonna love that this summer. So nice to just
spritz some cleaning shitz in it and wipe it out. Looks way nicer.
I just bought the stuff to redo mine. Probably hit it this weekend
so I can start putting stuff back together (humpty friggin dumpty
boat).
Kinda cool knowing that you've got a good sealing coat on all the
wood too. Nobody wants rot.

Well i just finished cleaning all the dust off. Gave it a good washing and it looks nice but the guy who did it got gel coat all over the topside of the boat on the paint. What can i use to get it off of the clear coat. I saw one spot that he got resin on to. Not to happy about that.

If your boat is gelcoated and they're just little beads or droplets
you can carefully take them off with a single edge razor blade.
It'll usually just pop off. Then a little wetsand and buff it out.
If your boat is painted.................I have no idea.
If you can catch it before it hardens/kicks you can wipe if off real
easy with acetone on a rag. I know that doesn't help much now.
The dude should've been on that one though.
