We will be changing forum software here shortly. UBB running CGI under 2000 is just too slow. We will probably be going to a PHP or ASP based forum. Currently I am looking at VBulletin, however if people have suggestions or software they like I would interested in taking a look. The only real stipulation is that the new BB needs to be able to import all the forum directory structure, users (plus info and avatars) and all the posts.

You may want to look at PerlEx, http://www.activestate.com/Products/PerlEx/ I don't have any personal experience with it but I've heard good things about it for increasing CGI performance under Win2K. Or you could just dump IIS/Win2K and replace with Apache/Linux.

I'm glad you want to preserve the database. There's some high end profanity in here. :D
The forum software I've looked at have all been pretty similar, as far as features and abilities go. There are some variations, though.
Have you thought of switching to a content management system? You'll probably want to get there eventually, anyway. You could just get a forum module for a CMS. I think vBulletin runs under PostNuke, but I'm not sure. I know there are a couple of forum modules for Nuke and Post Nuke. I don't know what the best CMS for Windows is, though.

I would like to ditch anything CGI or Perl. We probably wont me making a move to Linux or Unix for at least a year. The two languages I am best at are ASP and ColdFusion and I have not worked with them under anything but NT/win2k.
I have been looking for a while and VBulletin looks to be the best so far. It appears that the avatars and PM's could not be converted, so I might just keep looking for a while.
As far as content management systems, I am developing one right now that will work for the editors at Hot Boat. Did you have something else in mind?

Fuse Talk (http://www.fusetalk.com/) seems to work well on another forum I visit.

It'll be a bumpy ride for a few for the first few days.
A few teething problems usually happen when forums switch over.

Fuse Talk (http://www.fusetalk.com/) seems to work well on another forum I visit. I have been looking at FuseTalk. Macromedia uses that for their tech forums and it seems to work well. I have an email in to their tech department about converting between the current forums and their software.

The other forum I mentioned is huge and it seems to work well.
Good luck.

***boat, are you running PHP on the server as well? I know 6.5.0 has the option to use PHP to speed up the database stuff.
