Does anyone else feel that its time to elect a new president? this guy is sinking us, the economy is not rebounding don't be fooled. I just found out he is also trying to take money from disabled veterans, by cutting their benefits and realicating the money to the iraqi people, has anyone done a back ground check on this guy before he took office? Here is some info on the subject for anyone that wants to read more from the DAV site. I realize it is of no importance to those not on a VA disability, however there may be some out there like myself who are separated from the military with a combat or a non combat related disability. It is also for those who are just concerned where there tax money is getting rerouted too, strong economy or not.

Hey DGIE, I am a disabled vet and read those letters. There seems to be alot of smoke but no fire in those letters. They don't give any specifics whatsoever as to their gripe. I am going to look into that further. It also doesn't say anything about sending the money to Iraq????

Metal King I agree with you 100%, just upset that the bush administration is going after vets when it starts looking for money, and yes they are planning on spending 86 billion dollars in rebuilding Iraq as you already know. I have been there in 1988 (Persion Gulf) when Iraq was our allies, our ship was escorting tankers up and down the gulf, watching out for mines that Iran put in the water way. I went back in 1991 and the tides turned and they were shooting at us with weapons we equipped them with back in 1988. I just hate to see that happen again. That region is and always will hate Americans, just seems like wasted money. But there is always hope for a peaceful world. Just as there is always hope for a peaceful Sandbar.

Did you read those letters? Obviously not. This is political smoke & mirrors and you fell for it.
The first is from Republicans (the Presidents party) to the armed services committee pointing out problems with their proposed bill. This is how the system works, you propose a bill then debate it, then vote, then it becomes law. This means they will probably take out the language from the bill that concerns you before it becomes law.
The second is propaganda from the DNC that accuses the Republicans of being bad. Typical politics. Accuse your opponent of doing something bad even if they didn’t do it and forward that accusation to a special interest group that opposes it.
This is all nonsense and propaganda. Try again.

Well I looked where you said and there is only one bill (lloked at both HR & Senate) that DAV opposes and that has to do with compensation for ex-POW's. There were some without comment yet but nothing about qualification for disability.

This proposal looks like Fraud prevention i.e. proving “causation” You must prove that your disability is service related. There is nothing wrong with that standard. It is used to determine liability in health and sometimes W/C insurance.
The real question here is should all disabilities incurred while in the service be covered or just those that are service related? (i.e. if you break your leg playing volleyball on leave?)
I would vote for all disabilities while in the service regardless of cause. This is the least we can do for our brave men and women in the service.

Well I found AND POSTED HR1588 and couldn't find anything there. The letters that used to have a link only talked about the determination of disability or as Dave says, fraud prevention.
Remember, I also am a Disabled Vet, 90% if it matters. This is something I am interested in. I went to the HR website and also the DAV website. The DAV website showed nothing about the "Smith Letter" which I typed into the search bar and also the HR 1588 was not in the current legislation area.
I did see what I believe Dave found and it was geared more towards fraud. If you can find something buried in the actual HR 1588 that I linked to then show me.

I just called a lady at the TWC that I have been dealing with that is also on disabilty from the military and asked her about it. She pretty much concurred with what DaveC said, and got her information from the DAV. The letter she recieved from the DAV said that you are going to have to prove your disabilty happened while on active duty, if it happened while off work or on leave then you are going to be shit out of luck. I do not know if it is retroactive, includes people that are already drawing disability or pertains to those that are just now leaving the sevice. Right now from my understanding is that it is a proposal and is not yet law. I figure there will be a hell of fight ahead of them if it comes down to it. I am not trying to scare anyone that is drawing a disability, just trying to stay on top of things and keep others informed, if they want to be informed.

There will be a huge fight because veterans are a large voting entity. HR 1588 is all about military appropriations. I disagree with a veteran having to prove that a disability was incurred as a direct result of service and during service. If something happened while I was enlisted and the injury didn't occur while I was doing something illegal then the disability should be granted.

dgie
09-23-2003, 11:17 AM
tell your congressman what you think. There is a link there that the DAV already prepared just have to put your name on it and address so they know who it is going to and hit send. Anyone else who feels the same way feel free to do the same you do not have to have been in the military to let your congressman know what you think. Sorry for creating this string for anyone who thinks this is the wrong place to bring this up.

dgie,
You really should do a search for the members catmando and azdon. Then the three of you could stand around and have a circlejerk. It just boggles my mind how someone who enjoys the things that most of the people on this site enjoy (boats, babes, booze) could consider themselves a democrat. Just remember if we leave things up to them we will all be earning similar incomes after taxes and it won't be by giving the lower wage earners more money.

dgie
09-23-2003, 01:21 PM
Hmm..ya I don't remember calling myself a democrat but whatever you want to call it is fine with me. Like I said I do not plan to stoop to the level of people like you. If I post nothing after this do not think that you or anyone ran me off. This string is just becoming a waste of my time and I have other things on my mind right now then to deal with this. I put the information out there for those it pertains too, if not ignore it. That’s all thanks.

Dave C
09-23-2003, 02:08 PM
In my experience, most laws are not retroactive and those already collecting on a disability will probably be "grand-fathered" into their payments. So it will probably pertain to future claims for disability.

John "the french looking" Kerry. I seriously doubt that.
Here are some quotes from your democratic partners. This was posted on another thred but maybe you didn't see it. Your man Kerry is in there three times with wonderful statements. the 5th, 14th & last entry. It is fun to see them peddling around now and hoping people don't rmemeber these statements. :D
We've all heard the Democrats saying President Bush lied, that there never were any WMDs and he took us to war for his oil buddies, right? It's a shame that so many Americans believe the Democrat spin. Is there a chance for them? Will they ever learn?
"One way or the other, we are determined to deny Iraq the capacity to develop weapons of mass destruction and the missiles to deliver them. That is our bottom line." President Clinton, Feb. 4, 1998.
"If Saddam rejects peace and we have to use force, our purpose is clear. We want to seriously diminish the threat posed by Iraq's weapons of mass destruction program." President Clinton, Feb. 17, 1998.
"Iraq is a long way from [here], but what happens there matters a great deal here. For the risks that the leaders of a rogue state will use nuclear, chemical or biological weapons against us or our allies is the greatest security threat we face." Madeline Albright, Feb 18, 1998.
"He will use those weapons of mass destruction again, as he has ten times since 1983." Sandy Berger, Clinton National Security Adviser, Feb,
18, 1998.
"[W]e urge you, after consulting with Congress, and consistent with the U.S. Constitution and laws, to take necessary actions (including, if appropriate, air and missile strikes on suspect Iraqi sites) to respond effectively to the threat posed by Iraq's refusal to end its weapons of mass destruction programs." Letter to President Clinton, signed by Sens. Carl Levin, Tom Daschle, John Kerry , and others Oct. 9, 1998.
"Saddam Hussein has been engaged in the development of weapons of mass destruction technology which is a threat to countries in the region and he has made a mockery of the weapons inspection process." Rep. Nancy Pelosi
(D, CA), Dec. 16, 1998.
"Hussein has ... chosen to spend his money on building weapons of mass destruction and palaces for his cronies." Madeline Albright, Clinton Secretary of State, Nov. 10, 1999.
"There is no doubt that ... Saddam Hussein has reinvigorated his weapons programs. Reports indicate that biological, chemical and nuclear programs continue apace and may be back to pre-Gulf War status. In addition, Saddam continues to redefine delivery systems and is doubtless using the cover of a licit missile program to develop longer-range missiles that will threaten the United States and our allies." Letter to President Bush, Signed by Sen. Bob Graham (D, FL,) and others, Dec, 5, 2001.
"We begin with the common belief that Saddam Hussein is a tyrant and a threat to the peace and stability of the region. He has ignored the mandated of the United Nations and is building weapons of mass destruction and the means of delivering them." Sen. Carl Levin (d, MI), Sept. 19, 2002.
"We know that he has stored secret supplies of biological and chemical weapons throughout his country." Al Gore, Sept. 23, 2002.
"Iraq's search for weapons of mass destruction has proven impossible to deter and we should assume that it will continue for as long as Saddam is in power." Al Gore, Sept. 23, 2002.
"We have known for many years that Saddam Hussein is seeking and developing weapons of mass destruction." Sen. Ted Kennedy (D, MA), Sept.
27, 2002.
"The last UN weapons inspectors left Iraq in October of 1998. We are confident that Saddam Hussein retains some stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons, and that he has since embarked on a crash course to build up his chemical and biological warfare capabilities. Intelligence reports indicate that he is seeking nuclear weapons..." Sen. Robert Byrd
(D, WV), Oct. 3, 2002.
"I will be voting to give the President of the United States the authority to use force-- if necessary -- to disarm Saddam Hussein because I believe that a deadly arsenal of weapons of mass destruction in his hands is a real and grave threat to our security." Sen. John F. Kerry (D, MA) , Oct. 9, 2002.
"There is unmistakable evidence that Saddam Hussein is working aggressively to develop nuclear weapons and will likely have nuclear weapons within the next five years ... We also should remember we have always underestimated the progress Saddam has made in development of weapons of mass destruction." Sen. Jay Rockerfeller (D, WV), Oct 10, 2002,
"He has systematically violated, over the course of the past 11 years, every significant UN resolution that has demanded that he disarm and destroy his chemical and biological weapons, and any nuclear capacity. This he has refused to do." Rep. Henry Waxman (D, CA), Oct. 10, 2002.
"In the four years since the inspectors left, intelligence reports show that Saddam Hussein has worked to rebuild his chemical and biological weapons stock, his missile delivery capability, and his nuclear program. He has also given aid, comfort, and sanctuary to terrorists, including al Qaeda members. It is clear, however, that if left unchecked, Saddam Hussein will continue to increase his capacity to wage biological and chemical warfare, and will keep trying to develop nuclear weapons." Sen. Hillary Clinton
(D, NY), Oct 10, 2002,
"We are in possession of what I think to be compelling evidence that Saddam Hussein has, and has had for a number of years, a developing capacity for the production and storage of weapons of mass destruction." Sen. Bob Graham (D, FL), Dec. 8, 2002.
"Without question, we need to disarm Saddam Hussein. He is a brutal, murderous dictator, leading an oppressive regime ... He presents a particularly grievous threat because he is so consistently prone to miscalculation ... And now he is miscalculating America's response to his continued deceit and his consistent grasp for weapons of mass destruction ... So the threat of Saddam Hussein with weapons of mass destruction is real ..." Sen. John F. Kerry (D, MA) ), Jan. 23. 2003.
