superV...thanks for some great old pictures, especially the first one of the 1960 Powercat with twin Mercury 700s. I was racing then in the Western Outboard Association, and at the monthly races at Pacific Lagoon in Long Beach, California and all the pictures brought back sweet memories. I too have old pictures of race boats of that era, as well as Mercury Outboard Catalogs from the 50s, and the first issue of Powerboat Magazine from 1959 (different publisher then obviously). I'll post some as soon as I figure out how to do it. Meanwhile, thanks for the memories.

Addendum...put on my reading glasses (concessions to age, you know) and looked at the Powercat again and realized those are twin Mercury 800s, and not 700s as I first stated. The better vision showed that the center cowling had single thick lines instead of parallel pinstrip lines offsetting the cowl black. Sorry.....

I used to live down the street from Neils boats . They were ahead of there time. They had a "Dyno "Tank at their shop. They'd put the boats in it and run them. Actually I think it was just a loading dock they filled with water!

The old school Fuel drivers definately had some balls. I think the Top Fuel Flats drivers are the ones who were crazy.

Cool pic Eric, you still have her? Brings back memories of the river.

Nope, it was my dads. He sold it in 1971 to a fireman in La Habra. Don't know what happened to it after that. Learned to water ski behind that boat. Still brings back lots of fond memories of the river. What I'd give to find another "wood-decker" like that!

How many of you guys remember the old Mercury Mark78 direct reverse or Mark75? I have one on a restored 1960 Cruisers INC. I have been running it 15 years and never had a problem. :D

I too remember the old Mark 78 Mercurys. They used to put twins on a 17 foot Javlyn Cat or Powercat, and race them here on the west coast. Then, someone came along with twin Mercury Mark 58s, with speedmaster lower units on a 13 foot powercat, and ran away from the bigger boats. Around 1959 - 1960, Mercury was cleaning up with this rig with factory drivers. Then came the Mercury 1000 in 1962, with speedmasters, and everything changed again.

It is very funny when I try to tell someone how it works. They look kinda funny eek! and say huh????
It was a pretty neat idea. If you get a chance to read the history of Mercury it tells how they had so many law suits from the Dock Crushers!!!! They were close to going out of business.......
