The 1x is just a regular Bravo 1. The next step up is the XZ whih is what I have. The XR does rob a little HP. With the 496HO wouldn't need the XR if the XZ would be the way to go. I think the regular B1 should be fine.

Bravo One- Mercs standard big block outdrive
Bravo One X-Bravo One upgraded for diesel applications, with a heavy-duty U-joint, upgraded thrust bearings, near-net forged gears, steel chimney, and thicker upper gear floor
Bravo XZ- Beefed up Bravo X; upgraded 1 3/8 prop shaft & billet bearing carrier

Fireman, if you have any thoughts of adding power later on, the beefier drive would be a nice thing to have. Of course most Cat owners NEVER want to add more HP!!! wink
HH & BF, who's your Wonka??? :D

I stand corrected. i didn't think it was a difference since I haven't seen to many plain 1's,I've just seen the X's ,XZ's and XR's.
Dohhouse, you are the Wonka daddy. "Daddy didn't care, Daddy wasn't there to change my underware"

My Bravo 1 just took a big pooper after 2 years.
On a 2002 Nordic 28' Heat w/ stock 502.
Replacing it with a Max Machine upgrade!

Okay, I went ahead and ordered the XR drive, that should speed up my taste for upgrading< yes, Doghouse, Upgrading horsepower. I also will be a bit nicer to my drive in choppy water. I guess hopping the waves isn't that good, even if you mind the throttle. More or less, things gave way due to me hitting the whole shot everytime out of the water... I'll roll up the throttle a little more slowly from now on...

Bravo 1 is plenty of drive up to around 600HP.

Mr. Vee says you should put the XR drive on so it will match the whipple you will be putting on it next year. :p

SDLifesaver:
Bravo 1 is plenty of drive up to around 600HP. Bravo1 is rated to 470HP. My boat has a B1 behind 600HP, but it is a very light boat(2100lbs dry). The previous owner raced it in POPRA with the same drive that's on it now.
However, I do NOT do holeshots. Weight and holeshots will kill a drive almost as quick as HP alone will if you're at the rated HP limit.

That's what did it to me, I had a 24 ft boat before with the Bravo one X drive and the 496, I did alot of wakeboarding behind it so yeah, I whole shoted alot. This 28 Cat is a whole lot bigger and heavier. Whole shots are now out for me, I'm sure the one x would be cool if didn't plan on putting a blower on it soon , but I have plans of more HP in the winter...

Also , a 21 foot boat would be cool with a Alpha drive , 21 ft is pretty darn light. I think for me it's more of a weight issue than too much HP.Right now the thing is only putting out 425HP, I think with the procharger and either 3.5 or 5.0 lbs. of boost I should get something around 600-650HP, then I'll need the XR for sure...

You should be OK at 600 with the XR, it's rated to 550. Any more than that, I would recommend the Bmax or IMCO Xtreme. The Procharger works more like a turbo, so that should work well if you already have low-end punch. I prefer the Whipple myself.

I have seen alot of Prochargers on the 496 HO's , How is the warranty on Whipples. I guess I need to do a little more research. It's gonna be atleast a year anyways, Maybe they will make some improvments on both by then. Or maybe I should of just got a HP 500...

I have here that Whipple is a better application because they recalibrate the computer and the others dont!

Fireman, run over to IMCO of Nevada in Boulder City and look at an Extreme or 4X4. Also, get the inside info on X demensions. You'll be happy later. Ask for Ron jr...

I ordered the XR to go with my 496HO in my 28ft Advantage. I have done the research and have talked to Dustin Whipple and that is the direction I plan to go in the future.
