I called the Mohave County Sheriff's Office Lake Havasu City Substation at 928-764-3535 to find out. The lady who answered the phone said, "It's closed all holiday weekends, including this Memorial Day." I asked which days, and she said, "It's usually Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday."
Happy boating,

Why do they close it?? I thought all water ways are public.

there was a shooting there a couple of years ago and it has been closed on all holidays ever since.
They don't have enough man power to patrol it.

I think the shooting occured after it had been closed, and that it was closed partly due to a stabbing incident a few years back, and likely due the fact that on major holiday weekends that place was totally out of control. Fights, rapes, injurys...way too many peeps for law enforcement to safely control.
Most of the party happens in the channel now, or east to steamboat cove. Either place has alot of police presence.

So let the idiots kill each other off  I agree, but in this case, the shooting was directed at a law enforcement boat that was posted in the area of the (closed) sandbar.
The story went that a passing boat opened fire upon the boat as it was making a high speed run by the sandbar. A chase and subsequent search by water, land and air followed, but the boat nor the shooters were found. :(
No one was hurt in the shooting.

There was also a problem with drugs and pornography...also, along with copper canyon, if someone needs emergency service, there is no way to manuever betwwen all the boats to get a rescue vessel in.

I take it they close off Copper Canyon as well.

We've had the Mexican farm workers take pot shots at boats in the delta, because the boat waves ruin their camps along the shore line. Damn squaters.

The last time sandbar was open for memorial was in 2000 right? What a fun time.
Any way is anyone going out on thursday? I'll be there thursday mid morning. Launching and heading to the sandbar. Which I am sure it will be dead, unless a few of us get together, to get the pre memorial weekend party started!

yeah in 2000 that sunday I was helping my buddy retrieve his seadoos, (yes seadoos) and there was a guy standing on the ramp blocking my path from backing down, I got out of the truck to see what the fu*k, and I noticed he was missing a piece of his ear. Mike tyson style. Looked like he was in some sort of major brawl already. So I let the guy be. Any how, its a bummer the sandbar is closed, looking foward to checking out steamboat cove. Copper Canyon is on my sh*t list since that pontoon ran into me for spring break.
beer hunter hope to see you out at the sandbar on thursday afternoon. :D

You can thank the MTV Spring Break Special for alot of the problems. Havasu got national recognition as a party place after that, and now it attracts the wrong crowd sometimes. Ever notice the rental pontoon boats loaded with gangsters rolling around out there?

I take it they close off Copper Canyon as well. Both copper and steamboat have buoy lanes that run down the middle of them. these are no boat zones, to be used by law and/or rescue personnel only. The law cruises up and down the lanes all day, looking for signs of trouble. There is really no place to go for the "old sandbar" style partying, all the gathering spots are now policed.
I have been on Havasu every major holiday since the late 80's. I agree with Havasu Cig, after MTV aired their spring break from Copper Canyon, the place was never the same. :(
Maybe I'm just getting older, but I liked it better before it was an out of control zoo. :p

The river doesn't reaaly have to many of those south central types.

RDI am sure there are plenty of Dumb F**ks down in Parker too. wink Multiply the typical drunk boaters by 100 and increase the stupidity factor by 100% and thus you have "hassles". Waiting in line to buy gas, eat, lauch, get a beer at a bar, etc. Not my idea of fun. The last time I went to Havasu on Memorial Day was about '95 or so. I can't even imagine it now.

The stabbing/pornography incidents were just part of the equation. The main reason was sanitation.
You have to remember that Blankenship Bend is in the Havasu Wildlife Refuge. When you get that many people together in one spot with no trash cans, toilets, etc. it's an environmental disaster waiting to happen.
After the holiday weekends, volunteers went up there to help clean up the mess. They ended up hauling away several barge loads of trash and garbage. Including dirty diapers, and the plastic 6-pack rings that get caught up in the birds and other wildlife, killing them.
There were several discussions on how to deal with the problem. It was suggested that floating toilets and trash recipticles be brought in (Like on Lake Pleasant) but the number they would need to make it beneficial for the thousands of people there would be a logistical nightmare. Not to mention that the usual holiday weekend Sandbar crowd wouldn't use them anyway.
The US Fish and Wildlife Service even talked about closing the entire Refuge to all boating on the holiday weekends.
But cooler heads prevailed and closing the sandbar area itself for just 3 weekends a year was the most agreeable solution all around.
Wherever the "party" ends up, be it back at Copper Canyon, Steamboat, or some other area, the best thing you can do to keep other places from suffering the same fate is to pack out what you pack in, and start getting on the case of others there who don't think it's any big deal to pollute our waters.

I can just see some agency bring porta cans to the sand bar and having a bunch of s#*t heads tip'em over and make the network news in Phoenix that night because of the gross pollution monitored at the bend down river by the same agency who put them there. I've partied at the sandbar on big weekends before the closures and found the three day crowd to be clueless to common sense in regards to their trash. The deeper part of the lagoon is really hard hit with crumpled beer cans, bottles, and even worse- ripped beer cans. eek! Driving up on Tues or Wed after the old 3 days would show glitter from so many cans. We would pull 5 bags a day out and barely dent the mess. Worst part is taking the smelly (river bottom) cans back in the nice clean boat because nobody wants to help carry the crap back. :( The crazies did it to themselves. My first Memorial Day in 78 taught me to avoid three day weekends.
Will hit the week before this year and look for the early arrivals. Duckin my blues away. :D :D

I don't bother with the big weekends anymore. But what ever happened to RESPONABLITY? All boaters should know to pack out everything they take in and not leave anything behind. We take boats of adults and kids and never leave cans, trash or diapers behind. Dumb asses bring it upon themselves. burningm

Yeah, I don't know the real name either but I have been calling it the Mini-sandbar for a couple of years. Always a good bet on Holidays! :) I called the sherrifs office and was told the rape reports and porno filming were their biggest concern but Boatcop probably has the straight poop. Pardon my pun. It does get to be a sanitation nightmare. Hope the channel stays open and clean! It's gettin' close to Memorial Day! :D
