I took exception to the notion expressed in several threads that being here means you don't have a life and that smiling at someone is a waste of space. I have some thoughts. You can read them. You can also choose not to.
I happen to like message boards in general but I love coming to this message board in particular. It is my favorite place on the net. I've made some really good friends here, I've laughed, I've celebrated with people; I've even learned that a V8 engine has 8 cylinders and that Bayliners are not fast boats. wink I've seen pictures of places I may never have the occasion to visit. (Sigh. Havasu is really beautiful BTW). I've been exposed to music that is new to me, which IMO is ****in' EH! I love finding new music to gorge on!
I'll never know for certain but it is quite possible that I have been smiled at more here than in real life even. Smiles are good! I like 'em! I generously give 'em away and I love getting 'em!
Every visit here is like a small social get together that I don't have to spend an hour getting ready to go to. I don't even have to leave my home. I don't have to deal with traffic. I don't have to wonder if refreshments will be served. I don't have to dread the host's choice in party music. I don't have to worry about offending the host if I show up late or leave early or don't show up at all or sit reading in a corner the whole time or stay for a really long time. The party feels like it's in my home and yet I don't have to feed anyone or clean up any messes. I can socialise or not and nobody gets upset about my choice either way. On an average social day here I probably spend time talking with a half dozen people sometimes more sometimes less. It feels like visiting. I am not about to go visit 6 people a day IRL. It's impractical. Especially not for so short a visit as what most of my conversations here amount to. Often there are lengthy pauses in conversations on the board that pick right up where they left off when they do resume. Can you imagine a phonecall like that oh hey buddy can you hang on the line and I'll answer you in like 3 hours?
When was the last time you wrote a note on a piece of paper and dropped it off at your friends place who wasn't home and all the note says is hey I was here hope you're having a great day see you when I see you? Most people would be pleased to get such a simple note ... means somebody was thinking good thoughts about them. I see those kind of notes all over most message boards. This board is sure no exception.
Life is very hectic for most people these days. It's not so much a matter of time- there really are still just 24 hours in a day. It's a matter of priorities and trying to juggle expectations for ourselves and from others. We all need contact with other people; a chance to laugh or rant or celebrate or relate or share news or simply to be reminded that we are not alone. We all have lives. Apparently we choose to include in our lives this message board and the other people who also choose to be here.
Would I choose to be on a message board instead of going to a real life get together? No. I'd happily spend an hour getting ready and all of that other stuff but ... for my everyday need to socialise, and talk to people and be smiled at message boards are the shiznit! :D I don't have a problem with lurkers or people of few words. They're here. Good enough. If and when they decide to post and socialise is their choice and I respect that. I want my choice respected as well. I'm a little puzzled over the constant mention of posts being off-topic if they aren't boating related ... the description under the forum heading plainly calls The Sandbar The off-topic social lounge. I don't post my fluffy social fun stuff in any of the other Hot Boat forums. I believe I'm not breaking any rules if my posts on this forum are not boating related. Maybe the description under the forum heading needs rewording if I actually am breaking any rules (just never mind Sir Mr. Mod Sir put the sirens away! Hoser. :p :D ).
As to the controversial or drama threads; I don't have a problem with those personally.
Do I lurk in them yeah I do sometimes. I don't choose to participate usually is all. Some people need those kind of threads it's a different kind of connection. Ranting isn't evil. The people who participate in those threads are adults. They know what they are doing. They can take some name calling and bantering and shit disturbance or they wouldn't participate. It's harmless and it is just text on a screen. I don't understand why those types of threads are discouraged. It's just venting. I do think the name-calling should be limited to those who are choosing to participate so that they have fair chance to dish back. Other than that, I'm baffled as to why non-participants can't just let them have their drama threads.
This whole board is like a big party and all the threads are lil groups of people standing around talking. Some of the conversations are just sharing of information, some are about serious issues, some are getting to know you better, some are ice-breakers, some are party games, some are just for laughs, some are friends catching up, some are friends ribbing eachother good-naturedly, some are flirtatious and laced with sexual innuendo, some are educational and some are just purely brain candy entertainment. I say join whatever apeals to you. Eavesdrop. Interject. Stick with just a few types of talks or make your rounds. I simply do not understand  what the point is, of trying to ruin someone else's enjoyment if they choose to participate in a thread that you would not choose to participate in yourself. If only it could be simplified to:
1.get along with who you want to get along with,
2.ignore those you can't stand and
3.have knock-down drag out text/smilie fights with whoever is willing
Those are just some thoughts I was thinking. I'm pretty sure I'm allowed to have those here. wink
Take care everyone. I really mean it. :)
Oh and one more thing ...

Babe , I do like your way of thinking!
I only attack " assholes ",just wish more would participate in the " playing -games " for me! I have found that these forums have gotten me to learn alot about computers and it wasn't boat related at all!
The way you talk about this forum, is the way I feel about " HavasuBarney.Com ", I love that place and the people on it, they tell it like it is and if you don't like it tough " TITTY "...
I like this place also, in a different kind of way, jet-boats are here and I want to learn abit about them, notice I didn't call them piece's of " SHIT "....I'am getting better day by day, so bare with me,I might own one someday, then they can rag on me
All good here, second home to me though, when you visit alot of forums and do the shit disrturbing I seem to drum-up and they don't " BAN-ME ", cool in my books!........( . )( . )....... wink :D

I read it too. I also sent a private message because it seems everytime I post ANYTHING, someone (not to mention any names HH) deletes my posts. Maybe someone can read this one before it gets deleted. Who knows. I have been told by the nameless person that my IP will be banned too. I'm not whining or anyhting. Just testing the waters here. FM, it was nice, keep posting. you are great. :D

That crap gets really old after awhile and the moderators have taken alot of crap from alot of people for allowing you to continue it this long.
And while I agree with what most of what FM says above I don't agree with quite all of it. more on that later though, no time at the moment to expound. :)

I too have put up with alot of crap from people but never once cried about it. Maybe some of us can grow up soon and not have to run to daddy moderator for help. Please don't start with me, I'm not in the mood.

Good post, FM.
One of the good things about a divisive evening such as this is that it seems to bring like minded people closer together. I've had two enjoyable telephone conversations and several pleasant email exchanges that wouldn't have happen if there weren't a lot of upset people this evening. A few people may go because of the censorship and a few people may stay because of the reduced drama but in the end, I suspect it will be a wash.
Like my good friend Kim, I consider HavasuBarney.com to be my home. The lack of censorship there resonates with my liberal social views. It's time I stayed a little closer to home. I also consider the CGOA to be my home and it's about as prim and proper as it could be. Both of those sites are consistent, though.
You know, despite the conflict and put downs, this has been a positive evening for me. There are some very good people I feel closer to.
Not so long ago, I was in the hospital for an extended stay. It was a real treat to have online places to hang out, shoot the breeze, see and talk boats. It was a big part of what made things bearable. I'm well now but I will never again take forums like this for granted. They really cheered me up and gave me a few laughs when I was down. Thank you, everyone.
Maybe someone will be down and will read about me trying to kill myself with a giant block of cheese, read almost any of Dick Danger's posts, or read about HOSS poking someone's eye out with a flat blade and get a few laughs. There is a lot of life in this message base.
It's summer here. I'm going to work on my recovery, my boat, and getting outside more. This is not farewell, I'll still be around although perhaps a little less frequently.
Cherish life,
Tom

FM, Nice post. I enjoy it here as well for the most part. I enjoy the relative freedom here in comparison to "most" other boating forums to bs and so on and speak your mind on most any subject.
What I don't enjoy is when members start bashing in a mean and malicious way. That's when I think the content becomes offensive and inappropriate to all but a select few who thrive on offensive and inappropriate content. I hear "just ignore it" if you don't like it from some. Well that's nice in theory but in reality if someone is making remarks about me or a friend of mine, about their looks, about their business, about their wife, etc. that were genuinely mean in spirit and that were offensive, that's a personal type of attack that can't be ignored as far as I'm concerned, even though I don't like it. While this is a forum open to public use, it is privately owned and therefore subject to what the owner deems appropriate (like any private owned media). So when people cry unfair because of not having freedom of speech when something gets moderated on the forum, I call bs. There is freedom of speech within the owners guidelines just like everywhere in life. Theres a difference between complete freedom of speech and freedom to use this privately owned and run forum that's open to the public IMO. If anyone wants to speak outside of the guidelines (which are extremely liberal here) or post material not allowed here they're welcome to do so, just not on the site owners forum. If I had my own Rex Marine forum, that's exactly how it would be there too. (no it ain't happenin). :) If you go into a restaurant and make a scene, you're asked to leave...public place... same principle here.
Just making a point that while we enjoy the freedom to speak on just about whatever subject here, there are limits and rightly so. People should have fun here but at the same time be somewhat respectful of others feelings, just as in life.
Should Topless be banned? I've said before no I don't think so. But... it isn't my decision. I like Tom Brown think it's a shame to exclude anyone (well almost anyone). I'm guessing posting content going forward would have alot to do with any decision that might be made down the road. And Topless shouldn't be singled out here either, there's plenty of others, some past, some present that have posted some offensive shiznit.
All of the above is just my opinion, no one elses. Not the other moderators nor the webmasters. Not looking for any debate either on any part of it, just stating my views. Some will likely agree, some likely won't. It's ok either way. I like this place, just needs to be swept up around the edges a bit IMO so it stays fun for "everyone" and people don't leave. :)

Couldn't have said it any better. I've only been on the boards a short while and have talked with many folks which I hope to meet on the lakes and become better aquaintences.
Its a great place for socializing, crack a joke, get some info or just watch. If one chooses not to get involved with the heated threads that is their perogative. Some folks seem to get really juiced and go off, so be it if it involves only those interested.
Shot ya a 5'er and plan to see many smiles in the future from me.

Hey everyone. :) I just wanted to thank some of you for reading what I had to say and letting me know that you understood where I was coming from. I can respect that some people think differently than I do. It did sort of surprise me to find out not just that other people had similar thoughts to mine but to find out who did. :D
Ok someone asked for the condensed version.
Sure why not. wink
An almost objective summary:
She has a life; forums are part of it. She likes giving and getting smilies. Likens forum to big party many conversations at same time, all different topics.
She's a bit naive wants everyone to get along or live and let live. She values the people who come here. She thinks the laughter and contacts made here are not only not a waste of time but are significant to people's sense of well being and a time saving way to socialise. Hot Boat Sandbar is her fave place on the net. She got a little defensive about her fluffy posts; says it's an off topic social lounge so she can post stuff not boat related and nobody should mind. Man she's long winded. :D wink
Take care everyone. :)
