That Lion Country Safari thread got me thinking about some old memories....what about you?
Remember when Disneyland had tickets?
Remember A&W Root Beer Driveins when they used rollerskates? Or had the Mama, Poppa, and Teen burgers?
Remember the clown at Jack in Box?
When McDonalds had a menu like In-n-Out?
Lakes and rivers, before jetskis? yuk
What else....?

Orange County was full of orange groves (and strawberries)
Drive-in movies
Drinking age was 19 in AZ and 18 in Hawaii
Gas was under a buck a gallon
A 21' boat was considered BIG on the river.

You either had a flatbottom or a jet.
Engines weren't covered by a hatch.
A wrench and wiggling it would fix your boat.
orange metalflake.
you had to drive the boat (cavitation plates)
Leaded gas.
stepside Chevy's were cool!
Extra cab? What's that?
You camped on your vacation.
You water skiied on your vacation.
An inner tube was just a black inner tube you got at the gas station.
What's a wakeboard?
Orange mirrored Oakley Blades were the thing to have

An inner tube was just a black inner tube you got at the gas station That was when kids had balls.Try getting on a black tube that's about 200 degrees from the sun, flying across the water and having the rubber remove a couple layers of skin before the 7" long valvestem tries to impale you as you fly off at 50mph and get a class A water enema.Nowadays their parents put them in front facing floaties with seats and drive around at 20mph.When we tubed, and I can't verify this, our parents were trying to get even with us for all those sleepless nights.

Free "air" at the local gas station. 45 rpm records eek! Minium wage was a whole dollar an hour but that buck got ya alot of good stuff. You could "do the town" on $10-15 dollars 'cause drinks were $.50 or $.75 for a "call" drink. Damn, I'm old. I could go on but I'll just get depressed. cry

I remember those. Great rides. Don't know how it is out west but those are actually illegal to use in Georgia now. Tree huggers claimed petroleum products used in the manufacturing of "real" inner tubes could leach into the water. Sounds like the water toy industry just had a great lobby.

We used to skate a pipe under the 118 freeway, although it was just the dirt roadway underconstruction. Also at lassen and topanga, there is a little white house at the time was abandon, we used to skate that pool also.
We also used to skate open bowls in the dirt fields in what is now called Porter Ranch.

What about spending the night at County line and surfing in the morning and never seeing the Sheriff, going across PCH to get a sandwich at the little shack. Okay, I have Rexone and MandMGV beat with their OCIR memories.
I remember BEFORE there was OCIR and we went to the drag races at Santa Ana Airport (now known as John Wayne Airport.)
I haven't been back in a while, but Irvine was nothing but miles and miles of orange groves.

I remember there used to be an A&W in Parker that served the biggest order of french fries ever.
We used to go to an irrigation control ditch out in the desert near Parker, where there was this control gate that held back the water and let about a couple of inches of water out from underneath. We used to climb out there and slide off the concrete pad into the ditch and get washed away. Is that still there?

when I was a kid before the internet the major Las Vegas hotels had store front sales offices on Sunset Blvd.
Each office had a faded star as a greeter, perhaps to get people to come in.
Ceasars Palace had George Raft. He was there almost everyday they were open. You could always go shake his hand, get a cool Key chain or some trinket. He and all the other stars were always nice to us kids.
Down the street from Ceasars Palace was a storefront mini casino called Little Caesars, no connection the Caesars Palace. It was owned by Jack Davis, a bad tempered, former boxer thug that would punch out any customer or employee he felt like. Happened all the time.
It had a self serve bar, 25 cent craps, 50 cent Blackjack.

How about those "film-strips" in school. The ones where there was a big reel and a tape you played that would beep when you had to switch the slide on the film.
Or the dorks that ran them. Audio/Video geeks. (Yeah, I ran it every now and then...so what!!! wink )
How about the BS assemblys we had in Junior high with the three slide projectors and a film projector that were all choreographed for some feel good spirit junk. That was the deal back then boy... They would sucker you into selling a pile of magazines so you could catch a free afternoon off watching these dumb assemblies insead of going to class.
As I recall, we used the "dark time" in the auditoriums for trying to make out with chicks. Tough sell though. That was what the bleachers were for.

Man, I got tears in my eyes reading all these threads! Boat Cop really hit a nerve with me, I grew up in Redondo Beach and surfed the same locations. Trestles was always interesting, having the Marines park their jeeps on shore and wait for you to come in and how about LaJolla. I thaought I was in heaven 6' tubes slight offshore it didn't get any better! I used to race moto cross at Ascot on Wed, Lions dragstrip on Fri.and then do a hare and hound on Sun. How about fuel altereds and "wild Willie Borsch" drove one with one hand all sideway's. We actually started the skateboard craze we would bolt on shoe skates to the bottom of a piece of 1x and ride them ti'll the wheels wore out.
How about wood water ski's still have mine and use it, an old Feather-Glide.
