It was announced recently that Play Craft regained the official pontoon speed record with a 28' Extreme model doing 81 mph It apparently had a pair of 300 HP outboards. Right now there appears to be a speed war between Play Craft and another maker to have the fastest production pontoon.

They use to have pontoon races at havasu. Anybody remember those? I never saw them, but read about them in the paper, etc.
Imagine getting you a** handed to you by a pontoon boat. cry :D

I p/u the boat trader today and saw a 26' pantoon for 46k. 5.7 350 i/o. No matter what engine is in there I cant see spending 46k on a pantoon.

That reminds me of an expression we used to say to the distance guys back when I ran track.
YOU CAN'T RUN AWAY FROM SPEED.

One of these days when I get my prop worked out, it will be interesting to see what final top end I'll get on GPS. Right now my best was 42 on speedo but was only getting 4200 rpm.

Sea dog, just curious what did you drop on the crestliner. I looked at them this weekend at the OC boat show. They seem to have a top quality pantoon. I was sold, but I needed to get in on it with another party, and they backed out. 20k out the door for the 2081 sportlx. 75hp yamaha ob. I wanted the 115 hp, but the slsm said that was too much hp for a 20'

Scuba, you listened to a salesman? 115 is not too much HP. My rig, depending on options and wheeling, 25-30k. What works with the LSi is the 27 inch logs and the housing for the I/O acts to give lift at speed.
Get the most HP you can afford. You can always power down when you don't need it, but getting more oomph when you get caught in bad weather is not easy. (Of course in really bad weather, kick the guys and mother-in-laws overboard)
I would skip the high end stereo and other stuff that you can easily add later.

They had exibition races at Firebird raceway in the late 80's. There were two aluminium poontoon boats running in excess of a 100 M.P.H. with twin V8 outboards. Both boats had full tunnell bottoms like a modern skater, and they had upper decks that were full adjustable wings. The driver had a large down pedal that controlled the wing and could reduce lift if needed. After several successful runs they blew one over on a friday evening with about eight people on board. If I remember correctly they killed three or four all media representatives out for a test ride. I don't know what happened to the boats, but one similar ended up at Sundance in Parker for several years with 2 V6 outboards and the adjustable wing. About three years ago it was sitting across the street from sundance with only one motor and was in total disreapir. I don't think anyone has seriously tried to go fast in a poontoon since those accidents. Also I almost forgot the fast boats were over 10' wide and needed a special permit to tow down the highway.

A few years ago the wife and I were cruzing toward Copper Canyon around 50mph and a pontoon
passes me at about 55 with only half the pontoons in the water. Talked to him and he had a 350 sbc on a tritoon. The best part is he planned to put a blower on the next month. :D :D Duckin out

The Misty Harbor pontoon is pretty fast without dual engines. Just a single 175
I bet it would fly with those 300's on it.

If you look at the port side stern cladding, you can see where Scuba Steve hit it with his Aftershock.

About a dozen years ago a guy came into Gary Kincaids shop in Havasu and wanted more power on his pontoon. He had a 350 mercruiser. We built him a nice blown 400 inch small block. It would launch like a drag boat, I don't remember how fast it went. He came back and said his girlfriend thought it was too loud and he wanted Gary to build him a 55 chevy to put the motor in.
Fun times.

in the 80's there was a ski club that would practice at lake roosevelt. the pontoon that they had would sometimes pull 8 or 10 skiers. that was something.

Interestingly enough, I noticed in the Grand Lake rules that they say open exhausts are illegal in Oklahoma. I checked the manual and it says all engines must have a factory installed muffler or exhaust water manifold or other effective muffling system. Cutouts are also banned.

Scuba: I had some business at the dealer yesterday and looked at some literature. The 20 footers w/23 inch logs are only rated for 90 hp, so the dealer meant to say that he couldn't sell you the 115 hp engine on the rig. 75 hp is still not enough for a large lake and full boat. 90 hp would be marginal.
Now if you look at the LSi models, they have the 27 inch logs. Believe me, the difference is impressive. The LSi 2085 is rated for the 115 and going to the LSi 2285 or the LSi 2285(?) Angler Edition, you can get the 135 hp motors.
Sunday, I was at Keystone with a 20+ mph chop. (Bad weather forcast, the wind died down after I got home) My toon could do the whitecaps with no ride roughness at any angle.

thanks seadog. I am still deciding what direction I want to go. Like you said I wouldnt be happy with that 75hp or the 90hp. The wife wants a new suv. Since we already have a boat, I think a new suv would be a better choice. We'll probaby decide what we want to do after this season. My 99 Dodge Ram is getting up there in miles, and I would rather have 2 tow rigs, then 2 boats right at this time. Once again thanks for the info & help. :D

I have a 30' JC TriToon with the 350 mag on it. It still has the factory prop and will hit 47mph on the gps. This is with a fixed 10' Sundeck with a ladder going up to it. The factory said if we take the deck off we should see another 5 - 7mph. It fools alot of people when we blow past their gayliners with 20 people on our boat doing 40 mph.

Scuba: Even tho you decided not to get in the market, I thought you might be interested in some info I got a little bit ago. My dealer is enjoying a heyday in pontoon sales. A new 2085 with the 27 inch logs and 115 hp Yamaha, trailer and no options is under $20k before any dealing. The LSi 2085 has standard the high grade carpet, the full underdeck splash guard and 25 gallon built-in tank. It also has the entertainment center with sink, cutting board and trash can. It has tilt steering and is 6 inches wider. The one you looked at will offer all these items as options, including the 27 inch logs.
Without knowing the options and everything about what you were looking at, I don't know how they compare, but I thought you might be interested.

Thanks seadog, new avatar I see, looks good.
Now that you bring it to my attention the lsi2085 seems to be a better buy then the 2081sport. I dont know why the slsm didnt offer me the lsi model. And to be honest I dont see much difference besides the log width in the brochure I have. They even have an add in the boat trader for a lsi2481 115hp for $15800 with a few options. They were going to give me the 20' sport with a few options for $17,875 before tax & license. Good thing we didnt pull the trigger. thanks for you help and guidence. :D
