Do any of you watermen actually surf? How about a list of your favorite breaks.. Longboard or shortboard. Kite surfing still is not a legal sport.
1. Horseshoes-La Jolla
2. Blacks Beach- For surf and naked girls, not the old men with saggy balls
3. Newport 51st
4. Of course, San O

Man, don't get me started. I was a Manhattan Pier local for most of the late '60s and early - mid '70s.
As far as Surf trips, my favorite locations were (North) Rincon, California Street in Ventura, (I lived about a block from there in the late '70s), and of course, the Ranch. I loved Malibu, but hated the kooks and crowds.
South was always Dana Point before the Marina, (Yes, I'm THAT old and have been surfing that long) Salt Creek, Swamies, Stair steps, (Lucadia), and for really far south, San Blas in Mexico.
When I lived in Hawaii, there was a "secret spot" next to the Coast Guard Air Station at Barbers Point. It only broke when the waves were 6 foot +. But when it did, there were perfect tubes peeling off the jetty, and absolutely no crowds.
Here's me in my younger days at MB pier, circa 1973:

Grew up as close to Trestles as you could get (right next to Nixon's old house) so naturally Uppers and Lowers are on the top of my local favorites list, however Playa Escondido in Costa Rica is the top of my not so local spots. Big barrel, perfect right and left, breaks over a reef pretty far out, only accessible by boat from Jaco (next to a place called little Cloudbreak. You get the idea)
Don't really surf anymore though :( Especially now that I just moved to Vegas.

Surfed my first time at Tourmaline. Paddled right out and caught my first wave. No help no instruction. This is too easy! Spent the next 45 minutes trying to get back out. Learned a couple of valuable lessons. Lean to duck dive and dont start paddling out in the middle of a big set. I was 35 at the time and it wore my ass out!

Favorite boards? The one in the picture in my previous post was a custom board, made for me by Eddie Talbot when he first broke away from Greg Noll and formed his own company (ET Surfboards). It cost me all of $30 in 1972, which included the team discount. I also owned one of the first "winged" surfboards, also built by ET. This was way before the Campbell brothers came up with the "Bonzer". (Malcom's now running a cafe on the North Shore in Haleiwa.)
Eddie's still making boards in Hermosa, but for you South Coast people, I'd recommend Rocky's Surf Shop in San Juan Capistrano. It's owned by one of my old running mates, Rocky Sabo.
My first board was a 12' hollow redwood model that had a metal fin. My dad bought it for me from a guy in Westchester, Ca. in 1960 for $5. I needed help to drag it down to the water.
My all time favorite board, was one I owned in the early to mid-60's, before the short board phase. It was a 9'6" Dewey Weber Performer. I really wish I had that board now. frown
