View Full Version : How come Arneson drives aren't more popular?

They seem like they would be the real deal, superior to a V-drive for efficiency. Why do they seem rare, or do they just not find their way to my neck of the woods?

I didn't think they allowed high performance boats in Canada Tom? :D

I don't think the ban is Canada wide, I think it's just around my part of the country. There isn't a lot of money around here, although we do have some bad ass combines.

When I get my lottery winnings I'm going to try one. I think the $$$'s scare some away that and the fact it would chew you up like a food processor but I guess thats true with all props.

I have another question to add to the mix.
Why did the sales of JetBoats drop off considerably in the last 10 years?
RD [/QB][/QUOTE]
Because,Little Mr....The people who were pushing jets so hard are busy spending all of their advertising dollars, and spare time, designing and testing, and trying to bring to market the first prop in front stern drive....... eek!

Because they SUCK? Humm But they also BLOW?

I wasn't aware that sales of jets have gone down signicantly in the last 10 years if anything if you count the sales of SeaDoo and other type sport jets I would think the market share has increased? Do you have any numbers to back this up? There probably has been a decline in performance type jetboats but it would be more due to the decline in 18-21' boat sales in favor of larger boats rather than a factor of the propulsion choice.

I would think the Arneson type drives aren't used that much mainly because they don't always work on all hull designs. One of the reasons we saw the passing of the Blackhawk drive. Also, most builders probably like buying a complete package. Motor and drive from one builder 90% of the boat buyers want stock and reliable. Merc has a good rep as well. The back fit isn't all that expensive compared to a B-Max or IMCO SC, about $13K. Only downside on my cat is it has a notched center pod and the notch would have to be filled in to mount the transom adapter.

on the same note, why arent #6 drives more popular  it would seem that the guy that has $250,000 to spend on a blown cat with 2000 h.p. could find it in his budget to buy a drive that will not break every third time out on the water.........if you think about it, it is propably cheaper for the #6 (or arneson for that matter) once you factor in having to buy a couple new drives every year

I do not know why someone doesnt comes up with a drive like an old reliable v-drive, this equals affordable & easy to work on & really never have to worry about like an outdrive but works like an outdrive. Hell I just spent money upgrading to a Imco drive. Heck on Monster garage a while back they put on a casale v-drive in an ambulance for $1500. Now we all know that it will give years of reliable service in Jessie's wheelie mobile.

Well, my 19 ft hallett has a 460BBF mildly worked over, and I want to put quadruple arnesons, what kind of speed should I expect with that package ? And is that free installation Jord, or are there other hidden charges ?

21rayson that's a dam fine-lookin boat! :) I've always liked that style. There's a 19' Nordic mini-daycruiser for sale in the classifieds, plus a 23' Can-Am Monte Carlo that sold last year(***boat won't take the ad out  )I tried to buy both of them, but decided to buy a Carlson raceboat instead. That Nordic's engine is to die for, chromed up to the MAX. :)

Surfacing shaft drives like the Arneson, Buzzi, BPM don't handle very well at low speeds, especially backing and turning. They make docking a real pain in the azz, especially the single applications.
On the other hand, they don't break, require very little maintenance because of fewer parts and simpler design, and make the boat run faster.
Mike Sage has designed a new drive with the Arneson #8 shaft that promises to solve all those problems. I'll post his site when I find it.
