View Full Version : Historical info on shipping manure

In the 16th and 17th centuries, everything had to be transported by ship. It
was also before commercial fertilizer's invention, so large shipments of
manure were common. It was shipped dry, because in dry form it weighed a lot
less than when wet, but once water (at sea) hit it, it not only became
heavier, but the process of fermentation began again, of which a by-product
is methane gas.
As the stuff was stored below decks in bundles you can see what could (and
did) happen. Methane began to build up below decks and the first time
someone came below at night with a lantern, BOOOOM! Several ships were
destroyed in this manner before it was determined just what was happening.
After that, the bundles of manure were always stamped with the term "Ship
High In Transit" on them which meant for the sailors to stow it high enough
off the lower decks so that any water that came into the hold would not
touch this volatile cargo and start the production of methane.
Thus evolved the term "S.H.I.T," which came down through the centuries and
is in use to this very day.
You probably did not know the true history of this word.
Neither did I. I always thought it was a golf term!

God... I don't want to rain on anyones parade.
But the etymology of shit is not an abreviation! The Oxford English dictionary traces it back to Old English and beyond.
Shit is an off shoot of Schite (and other spellings) which is a verb meaning to defecate. Plain and simple.
People tend to use abreviations and a story to explain away common terms such as "shit".
Oh and "****" is also not an abbreviation. It is rooted in German or anglo-saxon. Something like that.
Do a search and check it out. I did a paper on this stuff in school. It doesn't make me an expert but I did read a lot about it.

Well it has been traced to before the 1500's.
Rooted in German (ficken, or friken) and Old English. Meaning 'To sow a seed', similar to the process of(in the words of these high brows) "ejaculating into a female". Or as I like to call it, "giving her the sweet stuff".
The popular etymology of this word is incorrect that it is an abbreviation meaning For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge or Fornication Under Consent of the King. While there is credence to some of these "stories" the word is much older than these acronyms.
