SACRAMENTO — A ferocious, compressed campaign with contenders spending $4 million to $5 million a week with dueling lawsuits clogging the courts and the state's finances in disarray that's what voters can expect in the historic recall election of Gov. Gray Davis.
"Fast and furious, fast and furious. This will be a cut-to the-chase, get-your-point-across-now type of campaign," said Davis strategist Roger Salazar.
The election, the first statewide effort since the recall initiative became law in 1911, is set for Oct. 7, unless courts weigh in.
"When you compress a gubernatorial race into 60 days, you're going to have something unique," said Orange County Republican Buck Johns.
Former President Bill Clinton and Vice President Al Gore are expected to campaign on Davis' behalf, said the Democrat's political director, Bob Mulholland.
