i have an 82 2.4L 200hp mercury outboard. my tachometer wires to the cdi fried and now my tach does not work. i dont think my battery is being charged either. i was told that this is a sign of the cdi going out which is caused by a bad voltage regulator or stator. would it be a good idea to replace them all to be safe and ready for river season? need help please

Just replace the rectifier and you'll be fine.

I get mine from NAPA . They work great and are cheaper than merc but then what isn't?

Rectifier... not regulator. They are two different parts.
A rectifier is a small black box with three posts. Two go to the stator and one is the positive output that goes to the voltage regulator. It's easily changeable in 5 minutes.
You can make your own rectifier, if you know a little bit about that stuff. It's just a diode bridge. You need something that will handle more current than your stator puts out but those kind of bridges are common. If you don't know what I'm talking about... just buy it. They aren't that expensive.

Yep, NAPA. I even bought a stater there. Just go look thru their marine book or have a merc part number.

Hey Wide open Throttle,
Could you take a picture of the part you are talking about and post it here because I think I may be having the same issue with my 200.
Best Regards

sure ill post a pic tomorrow. i took the boat to the lake today and everything worked great. it starts alot easier also. i think that the rectifier must have been bad since ive owned the boat. one thing kinda had me wondering though. my voltage was up very high sometimes past 16volts. every time i was on it the volts kept climbing until i hit the trim or something. is the regulator working correctly or is this normal? i used to have detonation during hard accleration but i never heard a single ping or knock today. i use 91 with a lead additive which always seemed to help. not sure if the rectifier had anything to do with the rattling but the boat ran better than it ever has since ive owned it
