View Full Version : Propulsion Idea

You guys know about those high speed Japanese and German mag-lev trains right? I saw there is even a new roller coaster using it too. It operates by alternately powering magnets to repel and attract the vehicle at high speeds. Common train locomotives are diesel electric also. The engine powers the electric motor and not the wheels directly.
Here's my idea:
Imagine a set up with basically a tube that would be lined around the perimeter with these magnets. The propshaft would be the "vehicle." The drive would make the shaft spin by repelling and attracting it in a clockwise or counterclockwise rotation.
The drive unit could be quite small and would need no gears, and would have greatly reduced drag. It could be mounted at the rear of the hull like an outdrive, but be much smaller. I suppose it could be direct drive or V-drive style as well, even a jet if set up right. It could be trimmable.
The engine would be merely an electrical generator. I don't know what kind of power would be needed to produce enough torque and propspeed.
Any ideas?.....think it would work? Has it been done?

I think you just invented the electric motor ????

I think you just invented the electric motor ???? Yep, that's what it sounds like to me.
I think part of the deal with those mag-lev trains is that they use superconductors, the cryo plant would take up alot of room on the boat. (I'm talking out my ass at this point :D )

I think it could be done but it sounds dangerouse I have a few "sleeping" concepts for inovated propulsion.

You can ,but it hurts!

Mandelon , have you heard of the magnatron motor wink , it was featured in performance boat mag ca 20 years ago

mandelon: you have way to much time on your hands to seriuosly think of something like this  but i like it :D "THE COMMANDER"... doug

You'd need magnets so big, it would sink the boat.

You might want to try putting the prop in front of the drive. I heard that somewhere and it sounded like a good idea over the conventional setup. :D

Actually, I think they worked on a sub drive using the principle of moving sea water through a drive tunnel using magnetic force, but was never efficient enough to work out.

Didn't the Russians do it in the "Hunt for Red October"?? :D

Why don't we just use nuclear power for our day cruisers ?? Setup a small reactor, use the lake water to cool it and propel it like a sub or Naval cruiser !!!! And good job mandelon on inventing the electric motor !! You should RUN, not walk to the patent office and make sure nobody can copy your idea !! :D

The concept of Red October was that the Russians succeeded where we had failed in making the design work. Clancy is a military gizmo trivia buff and found info about the early experiments.
What I had seen that I like was an electric motor that looked like a narrow tire. Design those with the right gear drive and a light weight HO diesel generator, mount them on the pontoons and freak people out.

If the cost come down some here is an idea that could be a great idea for applications that need a 1:1 ratio through a shaft connection. It may not make up for the gears but it could work great as a coupler for your motor to drivetrain. I have seen this in industrial applications and it works great. Totally eliminates vibrations due to alignment problems, can withstand some SERIOUS TORQUE and actually helps to improve efficiencies. If anyone out there has a turbine engine that runs a constant RPM this can give you a great way to vary your speed output.

Sounds great. But very costly. Why not use lighter fluid and a 10' length of drain pipe. Cheap ass jet engine. Works in bursts. :D

Now you need to invent the floating battery that powers the magnets :D So far I don't remember any floating batteries so if you can pull off that one I think you'll have a winner.

Mandy, sounds more like something that should be applied to Space Travel.......Call NASA with the idea after you Patent it. :D :D That way we can save all the rocket fuels for our Boats.

And all this time I thought a magnatron was in radar equipment. What the hell was I fixing? Should have stayed awake during all the Furuno and Raytheon classes.
