I am kinda lost here. I started off ripping out the floor to do a tile job, then ended up LEVELING the entire kitchen. I took out and trashed all the old appliances, all the cabinets and what I have is a blank room with nothing in it. It has been several months and I need to get this project going again. Any ideas as to where I can go to get this thing designed? I didn't really like the old floor plan and want to make it really efficient. The kitchen room is not huge but it's decent for the size of the house. I went to Ikea and Home Depo Expo and didn't really like the ideas they had. Anyway, if anyone has any advice I would really appreciate it.

I lived in SD for a while, but I am not familiar with any "Kitchen specialists" although there may be some. Anyway maybe talk to a realtor in the area whose signs you might see regularly (someone that sells a buttload of houses), maybe they can recommend someone. Unlike Home Depot, they will charge you for the design service most likely.

I just completed a major kitchen remodel myself. Call Walter Busitill at 619-990-1549. He's a kitchen and bath contractor that I used. I'm getting ready to use him again on a condo I own in Coronado. He's very good and as honest as they come. He may be able to help you out. I had no cost overruns and no surprises, plus he finished on time and on budget, which was the lowest of the 5 I got bids from. Good luck, tell him Rick from Encinitas referred you.

Justin,
I have a friend who runs a cabinet shop here in Vista. He does work on the side....My next project is the kitchen and I'm saving a bundle...
My kitchen is the standard late 70's early 80's tract design. Pretty small by today's standards. I expected to pay around 9k or so for stain grade wood, but will pay about 5.5k through my buddy....INSTALLED, but not stained. He makes the cabinet and buys the doors. He could probably make them in a weekend..
I can put you in contact with him if you like...
His company does some really extreme jobe(like 70k-150k hoime jobs); However, He is a more than honest upstanding guy who won't mislead you...

Go to your yellow pages and look for Merrilat Industries. Merrilat manufactures modular cabinets used by many production builders, and I push them whenever I do a kitchen remodel because of the quality of even their entry levl boxes. They will have an outside salesman on staff who will come to your house and do a cabinet drawing for you, or draw a sketch of what you want with the dimensions and take it to them. I'm not full time in remodeling right now, but will be in another 1 1/2 years, pm me if you have any questions and I'll try to help you out.

It depend on your budget. Its easy to put $25k in a kitchen remodel. Home Depot and Expo offers free design service with certified designers. We shopped there and had a design done that we were very happy with. We took it to a custom cabinet maker and he elaborated on it but said they did a good job on the layout. We ended up going custom but that will set you back quite a bit.
Good luck.

I took my kitchen measurements to Lowe's and had them do the design work. They actually did a great job in the planning of my space. I ordered the parts, everything delivered to my house and installed them myself. I'm really handy this way, I would not suggest the beginner do this if you have never done this before if you want it perfect. The cabinets are true and square, the walls are a whole different story... it can get ugly fast. You can get into some spendy stuff, but there area a lot to choose from too. The custom guys are way expensive, but they can do some kick-ass work. I have also seen some really nice refacing jobs too, Kitchenworks (www.kitchenworks.com) did a large kitchen for one of my Analyst, it came out awesome for a lot less than replacing all the cabinet boxes. Very nice. Lots to choose from, it's all on how much you want to spend. Good luck.

Fax me a layout of the kitchen and we can develop a design. Its not hard to work with some ready made cabinets and f-ing with the standard work triangle. I actually studied kitchen design for a while. There are standard distances between cabinets and appliances that you need to consider.
Builders Surplus in Santa Ana that has 5 or 6 different styles of new cabinets ready to go. Within 5 hours you can drive up there and pick up all the cabinets and have them unboxed and ready to go. And for around $2000. Rolling drawers, plywood drawer boxes, solid wood face frames and door frames. Flat panel or raised panel doors, Pre-Stained Oak or paint grade, white or a clear Maple. Way better than build it yourself boxes, cheap and fast too.
Life without a kitchen sucks!

Just have your girlfriend tell you how she wants it.. :D Kidding aside, if she's the one working in it then she'd have an idea as to where she might want particular features located. Use those ideas and expand on it.
Its what I did with my kitchen and my living room. When I did my living room the whole thing started with a desire to install a fireplace, I ended up taking down two walls because our scaled drawing determined we didn't have enough room for all our furniture, etc.
just my .02c for whatever good it might be.
I was gonna be an architect until real life got in the way

I'm going with Xtrm22 on this. I've been remodeling kitchens from $2500.00 apartment kitchens to $125,000.00 customs for 20+ years. The Merrilat cabinets are very good for the price.
In doing the custom kitchens, the one thing that got me the most is when we installed a standard sized Swiss made dishwasher....cost of the D/W....$2,500.00. It just gets me everytime I think about that one :D
