Any Camaro from 67-96, especially if it had Yenko on the side.....
I have to agree with the 65 GTO..I think that was the nicest GTO...
The Mopars don't do too much for me..that doesn't mean I don't like them, it is just that they are not my choice of Muscle cars...

1968 Camaro SS. I can't stand those shark gill things on the 1969. I really wish they would have put the vent wing windows from the 1967 on the 1968. But all in all the 1968 SS Camaro is "IMO" the best of the best.

Answer.. ofr a prodiuction car, although only 17 were ordered in 1971..
1971 Plymouth Cuda' with the Hemi engione option in convertable form.
One sold three months ago for $1,000,000!!!!!
Hard top versions restored are valued at $75,000 plus.
Bird's and Datonas are fine, with the hemi Datona valued at $400,000 plus, if you can find one.
I currenly own two M cars, one a 1971 GTX 440 mag. Push on the gas, speedo instantly goes to 100 MPH.

I'm not sure who made the baddest muscle car, but I do know who manufactures and sells the baddest hose clamp for your muscle car or boat, www.pi-thon.com. (http://www.pi-thon.com.) If anyone is interested in these let me know, I just became their marine sales rep, and I can also handle your automotive needs.

If you rule out sports cars and pony cars the two baddest pure muscle cars have to be the 67 GTO and the 69 malibu 396 SS, followed closely by the Mo Par plymouths. If you include 2 seaters and pony cars it's the AC Cobra all the way (0 to 100 and back to 0 in under 12 seconds eek! ). Followed by the Ferrari GTO. Somewhere in there the Corvette Mako Shark has to be lurking as well...

SS 396? Sorry but when I was 15 I would sneak out my brothers 302 Boss Mustang. I chewed up more than one of those! They are just to damn heavy!
Had the ultimate line up once with a Mustang Boss 302 verses Camaro Z/28 302. Lined them up stayed tight about halfway through the quarter. He started to slowly pull away from me. I wound up winning in the Boss because of the intelegence factor! He forgot to repin the hood after we were done admiring each other cars! Slammed up and wrapped against the windshield! Scared the shit out of me. Felt for the guy. It was one sweet ride!

Getting back to "Factory" muscle cars....The 50s, hudsons, olds 303, and 324s the 56 powerpak, dual quad 283 chevys, available in a sedan delivery, which as a "truck" was allowed to use a 4 gear hydro in A stock Automatic, 57 olds J2 tri power motor, 56 Eldo w/ 2 4s, buick wildcat 425 2x4, 57 pontiac w/ fuel injection, also 57 chevy and 58 vette. 59/60 tri powered bonnevilles,(389, long before the GTO) 62 406 ford, 413 cross ram mopar, 409 425 HP chevy bel air, 421 2x4 pontiac, and on into the 60s with the awesome 427 2x4 fords, 426 Max wedge ramcharger mopars... These cars/engines wrote the book when it comes to "muscle cars", but this era died sometime in the mid 60s, Mustangs were NEVER a part of this history, just as Camaros, fast as they may have been were from another world, as were the Hemi cudas/Darts.. Things just wern't the same as the days of fenderwell headers, cheater slicks, sun tachs, "C and O" Hydros, B and M Glides, strange axles, Moon equipment, cool cans, and real Mag wheels....run what ya brung street races, cruise the blvd. The A and Ws, bobs big boy, oscars, (santa ana), whitter blvd. San fernando, Lions, Irwindale, inyo kern, half moon bay, eldorado,(vegas)drag strips.....Ok, thats enough rambling...Those, my friends, WERE the DAYS/NIGHTS of the Muscle car movement, and even with the baddest of the bad, some old guy would come along with a stock looking 40 ford, and dust you like you were going backward!!!!!!Leaving this funny smell in the air???...Moneypitt

I had one I bought from the original owner here in NC. Yellow/black int. buckets console. Original 55,000 miles. The guy kept it for his son, and when he turned 16 and got his license, it was his. Almost like giving a stick of dynamite to a Hamas member. After 3 speeding tickets in 2 months, he took it away from the kid and sold it to me.
OMG...it was awwwwsome. Would run 95 on the center Rochester before you pulled in the end carbs. Mash it at that point and you got mashed, alright. Back in the seat. The speedo needle cracked triple digits, the tach headed for red, and the gas gauge was beating them all to the peg. :D
Dummy me. I sold it. cry

MONEYPIT, you forgot Fremont Drag Strip. Those were the days! But some of the best factory engines were developed in the mid to late 60’s
The best Muscle car??? It's got to be a 1969 YENKO Camaro with the Zl-1 all Aluminum 427 COPO option??? They only built 201 of these!
Don’t put the Cobra in the Muscle car group, it’s a sports car & one of the best ever produced!
So What is a muscle car??? A 2 seater or a 4 seater??? I think a muscle car is a 4 seater with enormous power & FASSTTTT, 2 seaters are sports cars

No Ford could touch a SS 454!!!! An SS 454? Bring it on...I'll run you. :D

Just a footnote about the early GTOs, The first one, 64 389 3x2 4 speed w/ posi was bad to the bone!! BUT the 65, with the same set up was in fact 400 lbs heavier, and considerably slower......Moneypitt

The 67 Fairlane could be had with the 427 SOHC and aluminum front. This bad baby could not be beat by any shitty. I had a friend that lucked into one in full race setup. My personal favorite was the 70 Boss 302.

My personal favorite was the 70 Boss 302. The 427 SOHC was never available from Ford in a production car. It was bought over the counter, originally intended for NASCAR competition, but found a home in the NHRA Top Fuel ranks for a while after Ford refused to instal the motor in production cars.
I recall the Thunderbolts (64 Fairlane) had a fiberglass frontend, bumbers and hood.
The 67 could be had with a 427 side oiler with single 4 barrel (W-code, 410 hp) or the dual quad (R-code 425 hp)A limited number had the tunnel port heads that were supposed to be good for 30 more horses. The front end was stock Ford offering except for a fiberglass hood with a scoop.

Charley has it, and their were 17 made in 1971. Four were four speeds.
Most in the thread mentioned factory race cars, or COPO cars. When it comes to the 1/4 mile, a 1969 Road Runner 440 six pack was the fastest of the era running running in the high 12's.
The "Hemi Cuda'" is generally respected as the most awesome muscle car. Like it said few hemi's were made. In 1970 only 2,100 Cuda' convertables and I think about 1,700 in 1971. Standard engine was a 383 or 340.
My 71 GTX 440 "super comando" is one of 2,136 GTX's made.
To purchase a hemi Cuda all you had to do is locate one at a dealer or order a $3,300 Cuda with the $890 hemi engine option. Automatic trans was extra and made the car faster in 1/4 mile.
Slide into the Fall Fling at Woodley Park in Van Nuys soon to see such legends.

What are you basing your times on? Musclecar Review shows the fastest "production" car as a 66 Cobra running 12.20 then a 66 427 'Vette running 12.80 and then the Road Runner.
Most of these times are probably bull anyway :D The factory knew fast times in magazines sold cars. So when a mag would call up a builder looking for a test vehicle, I read half the time they sent ringers, the machinist dye still being weton the heads!! It's hard to believe anything could run in the 12's on the street tires they had back then.
You really can't even use the NHRA Stock class results becaus ethe NHRA refactors the horsepower figures as they see fit.

What about the F.A.S.T series?? they are running in the 11's on those type of tires.

I don't think they are required to use the old bias ply tires of yesterday, but I can't find the rules on the web at this point :D

Craig

Tires and Wheels: Wheels must be Factory correct*, including correct* diameter, width and offset. All 4 wheels and tires must be same size. Original equipment reproduction bias-ply tires only, no soft compound tires of any kind are allowed. Retread tires are not allowed. If the correct* tire for your car was originally a 60 series, you may run a maximum tire size of G-60, all other cars may run a maximum tire size of G-70.
I STAND CORRECTED! :D Wow!

I had heard they build the motors for top end so they dont blow the tires off them. Check this out!!!!!!!!!!! (http://www.moparts.org/moparts/carshow/2002/1/Hemi67GTX.html)

Craig: The W block 427 was offered in four configurations: The low manifold, top oiler; the side oiler; the high manifold and the SOHC. The SOHC was rated at 615 HP and higher.
While Ford never sold the cammer in offered-to-the-public vehicles, several were sold to various drag racers in cars destined for the drag strip. A few did actually make it on the street. During the mid 60s the big three had special deals going for select clients. There were Mercury Comets with 427s for example and one racer ran a Comet station wagon with a 427. This were categoried as factory cars, but no one looked too hard at where they were actually assembled.
It has been awhile since I had the details about the aluminum front Fairlane, but I'll try and get more info later.

Cammers were available to the general public thru the performance orentated dealers as crate engines only. No cammer was ever installed in any car from Ford. If memory serves, they sold for about $3K complete [Ford lost money on each sale @ that price] And the HP rating was 616 1-4bbl and 657 2-4bbls @ 7000 rpms, this was the highest the dyno could be spun and the HP rating was accually alot more at the peak rpm of 8K. As for aluminum or fiberglass front fenders for the 66-67 Fairlane, they didn't exist, they weren't needed as the Fairlane had no trouble meeting the NHRA weight minimum of 3200 lbs that was in effect at that time.

I remember a guy that had a SOHC in a Galaxy. Cool ride, even made it in some magazine. They said the only drawback to these engines were keep that 6' long timing chain in time eek! Still a wicked looking set up! As for Fords visual appeal with engines, I put it just above the Boss 429 for cool looks! 3 grand for a cammer, oh to have been back there with some $$$$!

From Hot Rod magazine
Did Ford really put 427 SOHC motors in any ’65 Fairlanes? Factory wonder-boy
Darrell Droke had one. The existence of these (and many other unlikely combinations) begs the question, did the factory do it? Or did the Big Three pull one over on the NHRA, building specialized engine/vehicle combinations “on paper” but farming construction out to independent racers?
As for the aluminum fronts, Ford messed with several combos, including an early Galaxy that used all lightweight versions of the suspension, aluminum bumpers and fiberglass body panels, shaving 700 lbs from a 4100 lb car.

The Thunderbolt had glass hood, doors, fenders. alum or glass bumpers and misc other alum parts. no sound deadener, plexi windows. Time slips from one in Calgary(3200') in 1964 were 11.90 fresh off the truck.
