I am guessing since you were able to get close, you work on them.
What happened to it, looks like a turbine let go.

Details, details.

Details, details. I'm curious too. Part of what I do involves health assesment of gas turbine engines, mainly bearings and gears. Curious if the onboard instrumentation trended this failure. Or was it the result of some serious FOD............like an airborne brick.

Details, details. Sorry .....I have no details ...I use to work on them, for the now defunct Eastern Airlines....I happened on this photo set at I website I cruise thru on occasion because they have some un usual pix....The topic at the website was "Ingestion"
So Im guessing some bird......A Pterodactyl perhaps flew into it.... :D

That is some pretty serious hail. That plane took a serious whoopin'. Must have been a hefty price tag to repair it. I'm glad I wasn't a passenger.
Years ago, when I was in aviation...I saw a video from Boeing on a turbine test involving plane crashes due to aviary colisions.
I don't remember the specifics, but they dumped two dump trucks or so worth of ALREADY dead birds into the turbine while it was running. Pretty much at a steady stream of birds. That mofo made a mess of some feathers, stayed running to. I have seen other tests involving snow, water, ice, but the bird test was the best. I wished I had gotten a copy of that tape.
