OK...here's the story....we get home tonight to find our two dogs fu#*ed up. We just got through talking about the fact that they were well overdue on their shots ( 6 months- 1 year ). They are two female pits. Both very good dogs we have never had any problems with them. Our oldest dogs leg has a few puncture marks almost all the way through it. ( She brought the ball over to me and wanted to play?? :( ) Our youngest dogs face is torn on both cheeks. Both seem depressed. We gave them a bath and soaked everything in peroxide. I looked up rabies online, all of the symptons seem to fit our dogs right now. I am about ready to break down and cry...has anyone had an experience with rabies? Thanks.

It could be anything ranging from jealousy, to being pissed off, to a dominate dog standoff, maybe one dog was having a bad day…literally anything.
We have had 3-4 four dogs consistently together throughout the years. We’ve come back from the river at least four times I can think of and found our dogs all chewed up by each other. Watch their behavior when you give them attention. Some dogs get very jealous and will literally try to kill (or kill) another dog if it’s is receiving more attention. I've also seen them do this in front of us...the kind of fights were you throw them in the pool and they still fight!
They can also get pissed when you are gone for several days.
We have Schipperkes, which I’ve concluded are kinda psycho. We’ve had three and every one of them will try to kill the other when they get jealous, or when we leave for a few days. This is also true with our Australian cattle dog, and our Basenji would always try to become the dominate male (alpha male) when were away at the river. He never understood he was no match for the English Mastiff (one of the largest breeds of dogs weighing in at a cool 155 lbs) eek! eek!
Watch their behavior and if necessary, separate them when you leave. You might save yourself some vet bills, or the weakest dog’s life.
Don't despair...patch em’ up, they’re fine!
p.s.
oh yeah, and my wife's male cat will always try to pee on her when we have been gone for several days. Godamn animals!

I don't think rabies is all that common anymore. But do what will make you feel better. I have been bitten twice and the dogs were watched but nothing ever happened.
I do foam at the mouth sometimes though...

How many of those things do you have..... Animals?
Right now I've got it pretty good. Only 3 dogs, 5 cats, four horses, 3 wild cats at the horse property, chickens and a reef tank.
We've had as many as 12 horses, 6 dogs and 6 cats, all at one time. That kinda sucked!
How many other people running around with a horse bite on their boat?
Hey, I live in the 909, doesn't everybody else have critters too? lol

I'm waiting for the vet to open. Our youngest dog seems fine...she is just really quiet...doesn't seem like she is in any pain...but our oldest dog shook for a while last night before she feel a sleep. She couldn't get up the stairs last night :( I think if anything she needs something to take the pain away.
I just don't understand how the whole rabies thing works. I think they have to get it from another dog/animal, and they have not been around any other animals.
Thanks C-2 you eased our minds for the night.

Ya..that is where I take them ( Chino Hills Small Animal Hospital) Anyways I just called the vet..we are taking them this weekend to get their shots. She said that rabies is uncommon and we should have nothing to worry about, she was more worried about their wounds. So that makes me fell good.

Your not going to want to hear this, but if your dogs were truly infected by rabies, then they need to be kept away from any contact with you and your family. Rabies affects the brain, and will cause your pet(s) to engage in aggressive behavior that they have no control over. If they are indeed infected by rabies, and bit you, or someone else, guess what? You now have rabies. I hope that your dogs get treatment for whatever is ailing them, and return to normal soon. -DD Out

DickDaner is CORRECT !!!!
get them to a Vet ASAP and have them Quarintined...
Rabies is very contagious ,you do not have to be bitten to get it !!!! They could lick you in the face or open wound and you can get it !!! it is transmitted in Saliva ....wash everything they may have drooled or slept on or came in contact with ..I may be a little extreme ,but here in Texas I am around all kinds of wild animals and keep a close eye on my pets for this,.Be on the safe side , this is a very Serious Disease and I have heard Treatments are not Pleasant should you get it....
Hope you are wrong about it being Rabies....
God Bless

Rabies testing does not include killing the dog anymore. Don't sweat it. Take the dog to the VET. They will confine and observe and test. Very little chance of dogs having rabies, it is not quite eliminated but is pretty rare now days.

Make a list of people YOU want to bite if you do get it.

I called the vet to check on their shots..and which ones they needed. They are both up to date on their rabies....but need everything thing else..so we are taking them to the clinic this weekend. Both dogs seem a whole lot better....I guess I just freaked out too soon.

Do you leave them outside?
I had a dog die of rabies when I was younger, but it never had any rips or anything, just got very ill and died.
If you leave them outside maybe they got into it with something.

I doubt it's rabies especially since the rabies shots are current. Rabies is rare around here, mainly found in ground squirrls, rodents as carriers. They probably just got pissed at each other. Had this happen with my former dogs, one was very alpha maleish, had to end up seperating them when I was gone at all times to stop it from happening. If the wounds are deep though you should get them stitched up so they don't get infected and heal properly.

Mrs.909er

We have to leave them outside while we are at the lake.
Mike...we didn't make it on the lake this last weekend....we went and visited grandparents and did some maintance to the boat. We saw that fire..do you know what happened and where it was at?

dmontzsta
08-25-2003, 06:43 PM
Most likely just a fight, or maybe they got into it with a possum, racoon, or some other animal. I came home to my old pitbull all cut up in the face, chest and legs and he was running around the back yard stinking with a dead skunk in his mouth.
There are weird things in the IE, I saw a huge racoon at the gas station at around 9:30pm, he jumped up on the gas pump like he owned the place.
I hope they get better...secret is aloe vera, that stuff work miracles, I would take some gauze and put some aloe vera plant in it and wrap their leg in that and just dab it on the other wounds. If you dont have aloe vera, you should get a start, that stuff grows with no maintanence and comes in handy for sunburns.
Wow that was alot of typing :)

We saw that fire..do you know what happened and where it was at? [/QB][/QUOTE]
The fire was on the river about halfway between the lake and the sandbar, on the west side (California side) of the river, a couple hundred yards up the hillside from the river.
I got pretty big...I can't imagine how it started because it looks like there is nothing there. I don't know how they put it out...how did you hear about it?
We went to the sandbar for a while Saturday and then up to Topac for lunch and then back to the channel...and boated for a while on Sundya.....nice weekend.
I left my boat and truck at a friends house in Havasu...took 6 hours to get there with the truck and trailor and 4 hours to get home in my BMW.....100 mph on Rice Road sure saves time.

I know they are always trying to fight with the dogs next to us...if they did I would hope our neighbors would let us know. Our dog that has holes in her leg is running around like everything is normal now. Damn pits are tough.

i know im late but...just to clear some things up about rabies...the only way they can check for rabies is to
a)watch the dog for several days and check for symptoms..which is the first measure...
b)chop off the dogs head and have the dogs brain exaimined at a local state lab
and thats all they can do...i cant stress this enough GET THE SHOTS its worth the money.
i know this because i live in WISCONSIN and rabies is around here, and i also worked at a vet clinic for a few years
hope this helps
