View Full Version : Alternator to close to header?

I just had a rail kit installed and the alternator is now extremely close to the header (¼ “). I know the headers can get over a couple hundred degrees and ¼ “ doesn’t seem like enough room to keep the alternator from getting hot. I don’t know what would actually happen if it got too hot but I am sure it wouldn’t be good. It looks like I can shim the alternator forward about a ¼”. Do you guys think a total of ½” away from the headers will be sufficient to keep the alternator from getting too hot?

Can you make/buy a longer tension bar and roll the Alt a little further over? And/or install a heat shield with an air gap between the alt and header. Automotive applications have alt in tight high heat conditions, if you can get your 1/2 inch and some sort of shield you should be OK.............MP

When the alternator is bottomed out to the plate there is about a ¼” play between the alternator and the block. The arm is the right size unless the plate were to be cut and then I would need a longer one. I really don’t want to cut the plate but that would give me a little more room.

Grind the motor plate for more swing on the alternator, get a longer arm, and for Christ's sake, STOP FLIPPING PEOPLE OFF IN THE REFLECTION!

Moving the tention arm down to the other hole (in your head :) ) should give you another 1/2 inch. Then relieve the plate.

I still need to shim the alternator forward because the weep hole is just above the alternator. I wasn't flipping anyone off in the reflection I was throwing the shocker. :D

Great, all Jerry needs is another hole in his head.....
Use the Coors Light shield like I have......

Turn the whole thing 180-degrees (pulley facing towards the back). Thats what I did. Simple Fix

Wrap the header pipe with some thermal wrap.

Make a spacer for the crank to move the pully forward, then shim the alt the same amount. Then Make a deflector shield for the alt using one of the holes on the back of the alt. I made a deflector shield out of aluminium and polished it for a friend. Budlight

Hey Jerry, It looks like if you move the adjusting bar down too the next hole and drill a new hole for the bottom mount you should be just fine. Just moving the adjustment bar will hit the alt. fan. but if you move the bottom mount and relieve the plate just a little you should be about an other 1" away. I whould have Tom look at it first since he did the rail kit.
By the way, It looks alot diffrent than it did 15 years ago.
LOOKS GOOD! :D :D :D

Its a race boat, trash the alt. :rollside:
My alt is on the other side, do you have more room over there? Your headers are staggered.

Went over to TPR today and had them grind down the motor plate and Tom called up Lightning and they are going to CNC a longer tension bar for free. I should have about an 1 ¼ - 1 ½ ” of play for the alternator belt. Tom said I shouldn’t have to worry about the heat at that distance because of the heat shield on the alternator. Didn’t really want to cut the motor plate but it came out nice.

Looks like Tom did what I would have. One thing to keep in mind, though. The extra swing you have on the alt, doesn't give you much adjustment on the belt..... the alt shaft, pivot and crankshaft are real close to being inline. Be real selective on your belt length.
Now, get it out of Tom's way so the circus boat can get done! j/k

I think there is a sea doo boat in front of yours. :)

I don't think so. I heard the engine's out already, so it'll be coming home this Saturday so I can do my thing to it, while Todd does his thing to the hull. Nothing major, just check the bearings, replace the oil pump with a high volume unit, and change the pickup.
