Something really strange happened with Ziggy (my new dog) today. My girlfriend called me and said that Ziggy was having a seizure. He was stretched out on the floor, relieved his bowels and was shaking. His front legs were stretched in front of him and his hind legs were stretched all the way behind him. He did this for about three minutes. Then he hopped up and started wagging his tail. He was a little groggy, but normal looking. She rushed him to the vet. By the time she got there he was completely normal and was pulling hard on the leash like he always does. This scared the hell out of both of us. The vet says he looks fine but to find out what caused this for sure, he needs to get some tests done (blood and urine samples and lab work). I have a friend that has epilepsy and he was telling me that this can be caused from head trauma. Does anyone know about this kind of thing? He was a rescue dog and I am wondering if he was severly abused. If anyone knows anything, please let me know and I will let you know what we find out. My heart is beating a mile a minute right now....

I don’t know anything about it but I would have the tests done at the vets. From what I understand dogs that have seizures can be treated with medication and live full happy lives.

I sent an e-mail to the lady that I adopted him from and am waiting to hear back. I asked her if she knew about this. Nothing has really changed in his life lately. Only things out of the ordinary are that he ate a bite of cornbread last night. I think he ate a little grass this morning from the front lawn, and that's about it. Sharon says his stomach has been growling. I wonder if he ate something poisonous....

My dog did the same thing. I spoke with the vet about it and he sais as my dog gets older this happens. He said that dogs have siezures and that I just saw one but it probally wasn't the first time. Sure as hell scared the hell outta me. Vet that he was just fine and that the older he got the likelyhood I'd see him have more seizures.

Let the Vet do the tests. Follow the vet's advice.
I've been involved with the biological and zoological sciences all my life and I have some guesses as to what it could be. However guesses are of no clinical use. Deal with your vet and be patient.
Good Luck, he will most likely be ok :) even though it "could" be a sign of something really serious.

I don't think something he ate would cause that. It's probably somewhat possible but not very likely. I had a dog that ate everything under the sun. One night she ate an entrie bag of M&M's and not a little bag or King size bag one of those big huge bags. Another night she ate 5 bottles of albuterol solution for a breathing machine (same stuff thats in inhalers) She shook like crazy and I took her to the vet both times but the vet just told me to keep an eye on her and she never had seizures. She even jumped out of a car going like 35 MPH and didnt even get a scratch but sadly died of Parvo a few months after the Albuterol incident.
If a bag of M&M's and 5 bottles of albuterol didn't make that dog have seizures I highly doubt that a bite of cornbread or some grass would.

PC He was a stray and we rescued him. He was found on the street and they estimate him to be around one year old. It really shook my girlfriend up. I was at work when it happened. It just happened like an hour ago.... Poor little guy.

PC Party Cat would you have another Sheltie if given the oppurtunity? I'm getting a rottweiler that's gonna be mainly out doors and I want a little doggy for inside. A Sheltie is one of my prime candidates.

If he was severly abused, you would notice other traits such as being skitish (sp?), timid, hesitant to approach strangers, etc. If he does not have these traits, he probably wasn't physically abused much.
Be patient, and talk with the vet. :)

We had a Queensland Heeler a few years ago that was the runt of the litter. He would have a seizure about every six months or so for no reason, other than being the runt. I have heard of dogs with epilepsy, though, and medication controls it.

I am very sorry to tell you this but I could be hopfully I am wrong but it could be caused by a Heart murmer that is severe enough to cause a shortage of blood to his brain if that is the case its bad news friend but at least ziggy has someone who cares about him.

A little over a year later I was finally able to get another.....The only dog in our house (besides me) will be a Sheltie....they're great with kids....

One of my mother's queenslands had chronic seizures. The vet that treated him was Levitt Animal Hospital on Grand Avenue in San Marcos....Just up from the new Fry's... My mom's dog had a super severe case that finally ended his life, but I'd definitely recommend their office.
Good luck!

I don't have much to offer here but I know a couple of dogs that have seisures. My understanding is that it isn't particularly uncommon.
It's always good to get him checked out but I'll bet he'll be fine. He'll be biting the nuts off strangers for years to come. :)

Seizures can be treated once the diagnosis is made. As for eating grass, any dog that is not feeling well, will eat grass. This is their reaction to a tummy ache and is perfectly normal.

Well, we're going to get him checked out. I hope he's ok. I keep trying to tell myself that he just had a panic attack or something. There are plumbers in my house repiping the house today. He was barking and was nervous before his seizure. I don't know. The lady that was taking care of him before I adopted said she never saw him have a seizure before.

Dogs are like people in that they can have an alergic reaction to anything. also epileptic seizures, just like people can happen. JLNORTHRUP also brings up a good point. Your vet should have been able to detect a heart murmor when the dog was checked. I would wait til results of all test come back, if u get nothing back out of the ordinary. and it happens again, find a very reputable vet.

My last dog, now gone, had grand mall siezures starting at about age 10. First time scared the hell out of me, thought he was a goner, heart attack or something. What you describe is classic grand mall siezure symptoms. Lasts anywhere from a couple to 10 minutes or so, dog pees and shits and shakes and kicks like he's running laying down, then it's over and they're agitated and disoriented for a while, then everything seems fine after an hour or two. When my dog came out of them I'd put him on a leash and just walk him around, because he'd be so disoriented he'd walk around running into things. Sometimes I had to do this up to an hour.
In my dog's case it was a liver problem causing it. We medicated him for another 5 years, he had occasional seizures that became more often as he aged. If it turns out to be a liver problem, (fairly common I understand), there are some good medications to help control it. Just like a human with epilipsy, keep the dog away from things that can hurt him if you're there during the seizure, don't put your hand in his mouth if you value your fingers, and be there to comfort him when he comes out of it. That's about all you can do when it's seizure time.
One of my present dogs also has a liver problem that I'm medicating but fortunately so far hasn't had seizures from it.
Good luck and don't give up hope.

78,
I hope my little buddy is Ok. I've not seen a dog have seizures but have heard that they are fairly common...plus most dogs can live with some ailments for years and years. My older dog Jake has an orange sized tumor(tuma as Arnold would say it) in his bladder area that has been there for at least a few years...doesn't seem to effect him at all.
Best is to do what everyone has said and have him diagnosed properly..all we can do is support you with basic info(no guesses like EliminatedSprinter said) and past experiences.
Good luck dude, gotta love the little guy with such a great name!!! and I've never even met him yet.

Ziggy and I thank all of you for your educated responces and concern. He will be getting the bloodwork done tomorrow and I'll let everyone know what comes of it. Right now he is just sleeping and taking it easy. Seizures can wear a little 5 lb. guy out you know. Thanks again everyone.

Justin,
I thought the dog's name was Shorty??? It was, but we changed it. He was named Shorty by the foster family because he was missing one testicle. Now he has both removed and I don't want a name that reflects any shortcommings of his.
