I always watch this show. Its bad ass and their bikes are even better. My list of favorite bikes:
1) The Kody Project
2) Fireman Bike
3) Spiderman
Anyone notice this trend:
First show they went to, they towed about a 28 foot enclosed trailer behing their truck. Then, they towed the 28 foot trailer behind a motorhome, and now they tow the 28 foot trailer behind the motorhome and have a TopKick that tows what they said is a new triple axle double decker (hydrolic lift inside) 50' trailer. Granted they make killer bikes, but sounds to me like someone needs to say: "Thanks Discovery Channel."

I love this show too :D the first time i watched it and it said orange county choppers, i said "cool i'll visit them" well hell, when was the last time you saw snow on the ground near Disneyland, then i realized it was in New York and felt better about the snow :D i always crack up at Paul Sr. and Jr. fighting but then you have Mikey who has a screw lose or two but he's probably the most sane, never the less the show is cool.

A friend of mine turned me on to the show. I have been watching for about two months. I enjoy watching them build and ride the bikes, but the character interaction and development is starting to be just as entertaining. I think in the past, any good sitcom or show had to have good interaction between the characters. What is Cody's relationship with big Paul? Did you see Monday nights show?

but sounds to me like someone needs to say: "Thanks Discovery Channel."
Roln 20s Jesse James was reportedly (USA Today) shopping for a private jet last month.
I remember in his first episode, his (then) wife was gripeing about being able to pay the bills and make the payroll.
Remember the "Pay UP Sucka" tattoo?
Yep,, Thanks to the Discovery Channel indeed.

I use to watch it. Now they are just acting(Paul and the dork Jr.) And yes I`d say it to their faces. Its not spontaneous anymore. How hard does Paulie try to sound intelligent? They send everything out! What the **** are they building. Come on man, I was soldering and brazing at 14. Thats all Paulie does! Where are the real bike pro`s? No one at that shop. FABRICATION MY ASS!
Jesse has a fab shop. He does ALL his own shit. Just not the greatest on TV. **** OCC! If you knew anything about mechanics or metal fabrication then you would realize that OCC doesn`t know shit.

Perfect example of a bike he did all the fabrication on was the most recent commanche bike he even welded the tank himself. It just depends on what bike he is building.
None the less my favorite bike so far has been the spider bike. I also like Cody's new old school chopper. They haven't shown much of it but Paul Sr. also built a BAD ASS chopper for his wife.

As a matter of fact, the new helo bike looks just like it. With the exception of the little wings that lift up and display the attached missles. That is real gay.
He made the tank on the Commanche(helo) bike. WOW! All straight flat pieces. WOW! That looks really,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,****in` difficult. Lets face it. Tacking is not by far fabricating. Little rods are no where near using a brake press. Again, OCC is good for entertainment. Modern day Laurel and Hardy. They are not fab specialists. But they have bolted together some pretty cool stuff.
His wifes bike is nothing special.
Also ever notice that all their frames are rigid? Perhaps rear shocks would throw a little too much into the equation. Yeah I know, math problems can be a bitch!

American Chopper is a very cool show and definately entertaining. The bikes are bad any way you look at it. Sr. and Jr. arguing is funny shiznit too, even if it is staged. I do agree that Jesse James is much more talented than Paul Jr. or Sr., but then again I think Jesse's show sucks. Not entertaining to me. Who gives a Sh*t if he can turn a mustang into a lawnmower. I want to see his bikes. I want to see fabrication. Polished pieces, powder coating, chroming, clean wiring jobs, etc. For me, American Chopper is more the style show I want to see.

I have looked this bike over a few times, looks like pretty nice work to me. I have only run across one WCC here in Dallas, but I would say they are pretty close in terms of workmanship.
I have not watched the TV shows, so can't comment on that. Yes, there is a motorcycle in the picture. :D :D

Great! You need the new postal service video. Shows you how to properly box something up to ship. Even shows you what the box looks like upon arrival. OCC has shown me that even I can build a badass rigid by subbing everything out. And I too (like Sr.) really love powder coat jobs.
Paulie used a drill press to make the machine gun exhaust on the helo bike.
Theme bikes = gay.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the Trim Spa bike. That was definately one of my favorites. I'm not a big fan of the old school choppers the Paul Sr and Cody built, or the chopper he built for his girlfriend. But none the less, their bikes are sweet.
Jesse James was reportedly (USA Today) shopping for a private jet last month.
Funny you mention that: I heard from a good buddy of his that was on monster garage that he nets...get this- nets, around 1/2 Mill a month just in West Coast Chopper and Monster Garage Apparrell. Now thats a lot of shirts and stickers. But I give it to Jesse, his personality is great for TV.
Anyone watch the behind Monster Garage special last night--awesome. Showed how it started, what goes into each show, and their successes and failures. Jesse and the crews have worked their asses off, and now Jesse gets to celebrate by driving his Ferrari, and buying a Jet, not to mention that he probably doesn't even need to ever build a WC Chopper again.
I think its called "Royalties"

I like the show. Hoss is right though, Jessie James at West Coast Choppers does do a lot more fabrication on his bikes. I don't care much for the theme bikes, but some of the regular costomer bikes they show on American Chopper look realy great. But none of their bikes they have featured, so far, look as good as the ones Jessie James builds. But they are still way cooler than I can afford cry cry cry .

Your just flat out gay if you ride with an OCC bumper sticker. ****in` fags. Sorry Hoss, I disagree. I am a big Jesse fan, and have backed him up on numerous arguments on this forum, but he is merely a master fabricator and designer. Paul Jr. has not had the experience Jesse has, but will eventually, and will become a master as well.
I was an HT1 (Hull Technician First Class) in the Navy, and as such I will modestly purport that I can weld effectively. I am also a fabricator who has tackled hundreds of very custom, trick projects both motorcycle and otherwise. What Paul Jr. is doing is very cerebral. The design process, the fabrication, the tooling, the conception... all gets played into the final product and has to work at the end of the day as well. He is building show bikes, but the gas tank has to hold gas.
As for not doing anything themselves, it is
A) Not true, and
B) The best way to run a custom business.
With regards to item "A", Paul manufactures whatever he needs to that is not commercially available. They are in the assembly and customization business, not the frame or gas tank building business. Key components have been built or customized on every single bike I have seen them build. He inevitably builds the handlebars, rear and front fenders and wheels. Those are (don't look now) the signature features and components of any bike. To compare it to a car, he is hand building the body, wheels and interior.
He out-sources the motor. Who wouldn't. He isn't a motor builder, and has a source for amazing, top notch motors that are competitively priced enough for him not to want to build them too. I have seen the motors come back very custom as well. For example, one had the fins diamond cut and polished, with custom milling in the heads. Trick.
He out sources the frames as well. Built to his specs, as are the gas tanks they normally use. They designed them, and have them built. So what?
I will promise you this... If you want something trick and custom built, find a manufacturer who is set up to do a lot of them very well. The guy who one-offs everything is going to be way behind the more advanced shop in almost every detail. Take for example the Aston Martin Vanquish. Amazingly sexy car right? Over $250,000 per unit. Well, my Corvette was getting some paint work done for SEMA, and was parked right next to one getting a fender re-painted. The owner of the shop showed me where the car was all hand-fabbed, and cool... as well as all hand-fabbed and poorly done. The hand-laid carbon fiber engine struts and body mounts were super trick. The body panel glue holding the vent screens in place not so much. The car was full of things that unless you are able to design a system and replicate it, you are forced to half-ass details. Fit and finish suffers greatly. OCC can make you a custom tank if you want, and want to pay for it. Otherwise, they can save you money and time getting one of theirs off the shelf.
Make no mistake about it... Jesse designed some killer pipes and tanks etc. But, Custom Chrome owns them now and is building them with his name. His $1,000 "Hell Raiser" pipes are built by the same guy who builds the $49 Custom Chrome pipes, in the same factory with the same welder.

Those bikes are sick. And not in a good way. :) There's several things about them that I don't like:
[1] The ugly, ergonomically incorrect, and dangerous handle bars.
[2] The ridiculously long rake, which makes the bike even harder to control. Combined with the tall frame, it looks like there's some "meat" missing under the front of the bike.
[3] The tall frame. The gas tank is supposed to visually fill in the empty space in front of the engine/trans, but with the tall frame, there's a big empty space under the tank (and the tank seems to set on top of the frame rather than around it). Again, looks like there's some "meat" missing.
Also, I'm still wondering what exactly they do that's so special? I mean, they order up frames and parts and assemble the bikes (I understand it sometimes requires a little fabrication), but it's like, "Send this to the _______ shop, send that to the _______ shop." They don't even do their own paint, dammit! If I ever want a chopper, I will build my own or buy a Harley, thank you very much.

How when they send everything out? Sawzall, die gringer, and tacking. Yeah ok! Shit I`m a master fabricator! ****in` aye!
Froggy, they build their own handle bars? My hat off to Jr. then. ****in` chop saw and pipe, wow.
You also stated they build their own fenders! On that one I can honestly say ,,, BULLSHIT!
With your A&B response,,aren`t you contradicting yourself.
Point is that they are not fabricating these bikes. Yes the show was funny but now deliberate. They are putting them together not building. Sure they come up with an idea and put it together, but that is not and will never be fabrication. PERIOD! When Jr. cuts off some material from a fender ne is not fabricating the fender he is cutting to fit. They do sell some nice machines. No doubt. But as far as being running a great bike fab shop, its just not the truth.
I do agree with orderring mass quantities then modifying the pieces. Why not. But I would be no more a fabricator than I am now, which I`m not.
Powder coat, CNC billet rims, flip up wings with missles, brazing, a **** man, I gotta go. My head is starting to hurt. Cervesa!

It is all supply and demand volume over some quality mass produce make more money.
west coast only produces 6 to 10 max bikes a year.
occ probably a hundred or so a year if they made every gas tank and so on there is no way they could make so many.
also over 60% of jesses income comes from tshirt, hat, stickers, etc sales.
you supply and sell what will make you the money..
occ had air ride rear on one of there theme bikes.
not an occ fan or west coast like them both, have been to jesses shop and it was not much of a show room 4 to 5 bikes monster garage cars and a whole lot of tshirt stuff.

#1. grabbed my attention, since it pertains to my professional field.
The high "ape hanger" bars on the old school bike are a bit too high. However, most of the bikes they ride and show have the bar handles (if my memory serves me right) at about chest or shoulder level, which is just fine for a chopper style bike. After all, aerodynamics is not a prime concern, on a chopper, like it is on a crotch rocket, whose short low bars are just as, if not more, biomechanically unsound in position as those of an extreme old school chopper are.
wink

Hoss, you are dreaming if you think that Jesse lays finger one on any bike being built today, let alone hand fabs tanks anymore.
It is all outsourced, which is a far better solution to the problem.
I asked Jesse if he was interested in doing a low-rider, rubbertail frame drag bike and in no uncertain terms he told me that they only do the Diablo right now.
Unless you are Shaq, then you can have a big Diablo.
Fabrication tools are great. They allow you to design something killer, like a prototype and then pay someone to make a bunch of them.
In the words of Henry Ford... "Those who know how will always work for those who know why."
My new favorite line BTW...
OCC sells bikes. Custom to whatever degree you wish to pay for. I like Jr's creativity, and although it lacks the west coast flair, I think he has his head screwed on straight. I have watched him hand fab up a rear fender for the spider bike BTW, and made it out of 1/4" steel round stock by hand. Totally killer. I didn't like the bike much, but that was some serious fab and measure going on. He also made a killer tank cover for the same bike that was all webbed out.
I hate theme bikes, as much as I hate theme houses. It loses a lot in the translation to me. Lots of people like them though. I think the Pauls do a great job building them, if that is what you are into.
And again, I am a big fan of Jesse's fab skills and vision, but hate the way the WCC bikes look. I agree that they look like they are missing parts, and have too much negative space in them. If I was to spend that kind of cash on a bike, which I will soon, I will be talking to Roger Bourget, who I think builds the hottest looking/riding bikes on the planet.

wink I'm not saying that the handle bars should be totally low, either. Here you are, painting me as an extremist again. :p In all seriousness, though, I like a very basic handle bar style at about lower chest level. I don't think that you should have to stretch your arms to their full length just to hold on when riding straight because then there's the problem of turning (one arm has to be extended, obviously). I don't think they should be waaay out in front of you, just about the same as on a bicycle (again, distance, not height).
Don't get me wrong--I'm not into crotch rockets. I'm just into the nice traditional chopper look--not much rake (perhaps 30 degrees or so), a gas tank that covers the frame (doesn't sit on top, but more around, like I said), and ergonomically correct handle bars.
Also, have you seen that Comanche bike? Not only did Junior have to stretch his arms to ride it, but also the hand position is just creepy!

So the "only" bike that WCC builds now is the Diablo? How custom is that? That's kinda crappy. If I had the money I'd buy an O.C.C bike but unfortunately my budget wont allow me to spend $65,000 on a motorcycle.

It's not as bad as it looks because you turn (while driving) the bike by leaning, not by turning the bars. When parking or pushing them around you just shift your body fwd so you can bend your arms and turn the bars.
It would seem like the hand and arm position on a chopper would be comparable to that of a bicycle. However, the riding position of a chopper more closely resembles that of the compitition armcycles, that are currently popular with wheelchair athletes. However, on those you do need to put the hand pedals in closer for turning, because you do have to turn the front wheel slightly to turn them do to the 2 rear wheels.

How does if feel to have a custom bike built and then get your ass handed to you by a kid on a 10 year old jap bike?

Lets talk about Jesses Rev-Tec motor (not made in the USA) that fell apart after a few hours on his way to Sturgis. I have been a fabricator and machinist for a number of years, it is always more cost effective to out-source when you don't have the machinery, dies, etc. Bourget said his tank drawing die cost $200,00.00. Paint, if you don't do it every day, leave it to a guy who does it on a daily basis to get a great job. Powdercoat, if you don't have an oven and all the equiptment to do it, outsource it. If you want a super big bore motor call S&S and buy a 124 cu in. super sidewinder, it's that easy. It's also that easy to bolt all the stuff together youself.
If you like Jesse thats fine, personally I'll take the comedy from big "Big Paulie" any time over Jesses lame shit and his SERIOUSLY overpriced apparel. Note to Hoss, you seem really angry about something, It sounds like you need to get laid, and no I'm not interested.
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

I also think it's criminal to charge what they charge for bike parts nowadays. $500.00 plus for a set of pipes? Give me some cycle shack 2" drag pipes for $125.00 anyday. It's almost as bad as boating accessories and parts!

i used to work walking distance from west coast and the Last time i was there to drop something off they were still pounding out tanks and fenders, and the bikes were second to none. Absolutly tits. Why is it everytime i watch the occ show i see the fat guy hammering bikes togethor with a sledge hammer or BFH and a 2x4? i think thats bullshit. Id rather have a custom frame and have everything hand built like wcc, although wcc bikes are way too expensive, but so are custom boats. :D

i think that last occ black bike with the weird tank and the sh*tty ergonomics looked like sh*t, and was really uncomfortable to ride. I do think the shows are cool though, i already know of two younger kids that were very inspired by these shows to learn to wrench and want to learn about hotrods and bikes and stuff.I think its great, there are too many people who cannot change a tire these days and need some motivation.

WCC and OCC bikes all look useless and unsafe to me. Does anybody actually ride that stuff? That spiderman rear fender looks like a nightmare to anyone wearing loose clothing! And those long wheelbarrow bars on that OCC stuff and those "beach" bars Jesse did on that fatboy style deal don't look like they were designed for comfort and control! I thought extreme/useless bikes had disappeared, but apparently their still building lots of them for show....You dont see many like that on the street!
CalHot's bike is EXACTLY the way I'd do one (dyna's are cool!) except that I'd step the seat more (back support) and a bigger tank. I totally get the drag-chopper theme though!

I did a few bicycles like that...when I was 10 years old Thanks AzDon, but it's not a Dyna! It's an '89 Evo motor in a Santee frame (38 degree neck) with a ratchet top 4 speed, kick only, open belt primary, chain rear drive. I had fat bobs on it but switched to the peanut tank 'cause I like the old school chopper look (I'm a 70's kinda guy, turned 18 in 1974!). Same thing with the seat....I was going to go for a step but the flat seat is more 70's style. The rear fender is an FLH front that I widened 1&1/2" and trimmed up. The tail light is a real original HD tombstone with glass lens that I swooped at a swap meet for 40 bucks!

I had an offer from a business associate of mine to start a chopper shop like West coast choppers a month ago due to my extensive metal working expeirience and tools. But He wanted to set it up here in Iowa so I had to pass that one up! just no spendy rich folks around this state! I plan on starting my own custom boat works some time in my life! but I want to do it without a single loan! so that would be the reason on the slow ride on that aspect!
did anyone see that bad ass fire hydrant carb they farmed out? that ****er was bad ass. I used to do the machining deal but there just ain't no money in it as far as employees go and as far as machine loan payments. it seems like there are just to many machine shops out there, it just makes thing so hard to stay compeditive and make money.

CaHot-
I'm not that sharp at spottin particular frames (the dyna ref)...I just meant the swingarm frames are every bit as cool as the softies... The rigids look cool as well, but not something I could spend time on. I also graduated in '74, had a 650 Yamaha till 1980 and sold it in anticipation of getting a Harley ( still waiting!) I'm hoping to get a (very) slightly modified sportster in the next couple of years and maybe move up from there later (If I get much bigger, though, I'm not going to look good on a sportster) Is that a full size sporster tank on your bike? It looks good, but just slightly (disproportionately) small in the same way that the twin fatbobs probably looked BIG! Really nice bike! I'd be proud of it!

I gotta couple of much better ideas for discovery than the bike shows!
How about "Hot Rods by Boyd- The T.V.show"? or "Custom Boat Shop" Or "Insurance Fraud Investigator" (he could spend a whole season on some of these ripoff builders that incorporate insurance fraud into their strategy).
American Chopper is brain dead and I cringe at the way "Paulie" allows his "semi lazy" old man to treat him. It's more a cautionary demonstration of why a guy should avoid working for dad!

The name of the bike is Road Dog. It weighs 3200 lbs. An editor for Cycle World did an article on road dog and attempted to ride it but had no luck. He wound up crashing. Supposedly Wild Bill put 1000's of miles on the bike before a cop gunned him down.

Key word in your statement MY FAMILY! not to mention your location! there are to many mom & pop operations around these parts not to mention the big operations sucking in work from all over the US then you got the big manufacturing shops that do all inhouse. not to mention the fast changeing technolgies I mean you can't pick up a mill with a 6 ft bed for under 250K lets just say that a machinest around here makes about 10 to 15 bucks an hour! I say for me "no money" for you because your already in on the top "good money"

There are two things that everyone is missing, both Jesse James and OCC do well is bike building, or else they wouldnt be where they are now and lately very skilled and successful MARKETING........i see more WCC stickers and shirts than ever before, even yes on ford focuses and mini vans and civics, crazy but remember who is getting paid while your working?????
my 2 cents, if you want to see a great looking bike without the OCC shit and the WCC iron cross, take some time and look at Matt Hotchs bikes, Hotmatchcustomcycles.com
there nice

thats cool so did your grandfather and father start out using brittish machines? (machiners joke) Brittish machining tools would date back to the colonial days.
