PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Fred Rogers, who gently invited millions of children to be his neighbor as host of the public television show "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" for more than 30 years, died of cancer early Thursday. He was 74.
Rogers died at his Pittsburgh home, said family spokesman David Newell, who played Mr. McFeely on the show. Rogers had been diagnosed with stomach cancer sometime after the holidays, Newell said.

Did his death have anything to do with a home made mortar?

Guess it's not a beautiful day in that neighborhood any more... :(
At least we still have Mr. Robinson.

It is too bad he is gone. One of hte few genuine people who taught and enjoyed kids without molesting them. Most of the other scumbag's use this type of stuff as a way to get to the kids. He was a genuine teacher. cry

Man, I used to watch that show religiously, every day. His most popular years were 1985 and 1986 where his show got a 8% audience share, which made me 7 years old at that time, which is when I started watching it, till I was 11. Alot of people made fun of him, but I'll tell you, he made kids feel so comfortable and gave them manners and good feelings. He was a Presbyterian minister and a college grad majoring in child development I belive and during the gulf war and sept 11 events, he was very sympathetic and helped chilren work through it, he was a great dude, I know he is in a great place.

I completely grew up on Mr. Rogers. He was our babysitter. That was the only TV show my mom felt comfortable with us watching no matter what.
That is too bad. When I heard the news today I got kindof sad.
RIP bro. What was the name of the happy place the train used to go to?

There are never enough truly good people out there and we have just lost one of the best.

Come on now.
Sad he is dead but:
I thought the show was extremely gay when I was a small kid.

Just using terms my kids use. Gay = Sucks.
Terms I will get fired at work for using. No matter how it was meant. If anyone even overhears someone saying it and are offended. Zero tolerance.

There was a caller into a talk radio show that said Mister Rogers was a former Marine Sniper with over 100 kills. eek! He had a heart tatooed on his arm for each one, that is why he wore the cardigan and long sleeve. The caller said his name is listed at Parris Island.
I find this hard to believe. Does anyone know anything about this?

I also heard the same thing..that was one reason he became a pastor and teacher and you never did see him with short sleeves on either...I did not watch his show that much but when my little brother was growing up he did and since I looked after him I caught alot of the shows...

WTTW's member magazine, Chicago's local PBS affiliate, had an interesting profile on Fred Rogers on the 30th anniversary of _Mr. Rogers' neighborhood_. Here are the highlights:
1951 - Graduated from Rollins College with a degree in music composition.
1951 - 53 - Hired by NBC, became assistant director for _The Voice of Firestone_ and floor director for _The Lucky Strike Hit Parade_ and the _Kate Smith Hour_.
1953 - 1960 - Returned to Pittsburgh to WQED and developed _The Children's Corner_.
1962 - Attended Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, ordained by the Pittsburgh Presbytery.
1963 - Moves to Toronto and produces a children's program called _Misterogers_ for the CBC.
1964 - Returns again to WQED to produce _Mister Rogers' Neighborhood_ which continues to this day.
So, Mr. Rogers' didn't get the chance to participate as a sniper or any other capacity in any US police action in this century.
