What is the best flea protection out there for dogs? There are so many commercials, but who is really the best? The fleas are relentless out here this year with all the rain we've had. She gets bathed 2-3 times a week, and is using a drop type chemical, but they're chewing the hell out her. She's not too happy. :(

Advantage Flea Control (http://www.nofleas.com/) Works great for my cats. Best product we've used.

For the yard use Durasban. Good shit for fleas. It's the main ingrediant of most good flea sprays. But get it from home depot or lowes and just mix as instructed. The flea spray versions from the pet store are WAY too much moola. Same stuff. DO NOT spray this stuff on your dog. It's for the yard and grass. The key is to kill the fleas in the dog's environment and stopping their reproductive cycle. Treating the dog alone doesn't get the job done if you have a bad flea problem, been through this problem.
I use Frontline on my dogs. I've had good luck with it. I've also used Advantage in the past. You can buy Frontline online without a prescription for substantially less than from the vet. I use vetmeddirect.com. but there are several who sell it.
Good luck.

I think frontline or advantage are better for the dog than a flea collar. We put a collar on our pet and it made her sick. She kept falling off the couch, I took it off of her and the next day she was fine again. Those things are poison. eek!

I tried flea collars many years ago and didn't have much luck with them. That was before the Advantage, Frontline type products were available though. I've read bad stuff about flea collars too.

We have used Frontline with great results on our dog.
We now use BioSpot with the same great success only because it's cheaper. Just apply either one once per month (not necessary in the middle of winter) and that will be the end of your problems.
We have four acres of property and about 3 of it is thick woods. Our dog is in there all the time. Never a flee or tick on him. I have more problems with ticks than he does.
You can buy them both at Jeffers Pet.com

Advantage worked pretty good until my hounds got ticks. Switched to Frontline and all is well now.
Rex, thanks for the tip on that web site!

Thanks for the replies. I have 2 properties that I have to treat, so I'll get busy on that. I'm using this stuff with Permethrin on her, but its not that great.

The vet gave me something like control, but I can't remember the name of it. It's $30 for a three or four month supply (apply once a month). I found the stuff from the vet works much better than anything you can get from the pet store. If you use right stuff, you don't have to do your yard and house, because you have taken away the fleas food supply. Garlic in the diet helps alot also. I used to make a cocktail for my lab who was allergic to fleas.
All the vitamins are in soft-gel capsule form and everything is available in the grocery store.
1 capsule garlic in oil
1 capsule beta-carotene
1 capsule vitamin E
and 2 Tablespoons of Brewers yeast.
It makes the dog taste bad to the fleas and ticks. It works great, but it is a daily thing and takes a couple of weeks to begin working. The stuff from the vet cost about the same and is a lot less trouble.
I only use it in the summer also. So, for 3-6 months, I can spend $10 a month extra on the dogs comfort. Only problem is, I have 3 dogs and 3 cats!!! $$$$$$$
They still cost less than the damn horses though
