I am trying to quit smoking. It is killing me(The smoking and trying to quit). My wife wants to kill me. I want to kill anybody who talks breaths or is just plain stupid. My 2 1/2 year old daughter says I am "Grumpy", and "Quit being a Jerk". What works and what doesn't? I need help. I deal with some of the stupidest people on earth during the day. "Smoke breaks" have given many a tradesman a lease on life. I am open to any sugestions. I really want to quit but I don't want a divorce too.

It only takes 3 days for the physical addition to leave, after that it's only the mental addition.
Knowing that I used the "cut down about 5 cigs a day less for a week" approach. I just kept cutting back each week until I was down to just a few hits a day and they didn't appeal to me any more after that. It worked for me and it's been over 20 years. It will only work if you are truly motivated to quit.
Note: try not to drink coffee or alcohal during this period, or anthing else that stimulates more smoking.
Goood luck.

It is easier to do something when we are for something rather than when we are against something. No need to draw pictures of yellow-stained nails and teeth, tar-coated lungs and a cancer-ravaged windpipe. It is better to ask yourself to work on having a fresh taste in your mouth (when you can really taste your food), clean and healthy lungs, healthy looking skin, a strong and robust heart. Live that health dream. Work for it. Decide what you would be doing with the money you can save on smoking.
Good luck :D

Riverliver that is why i want to quit. When I was younger I ran 15 miles a day, at least three triathalons a year, benchpressed almost twice my body weight and could do unlimited pushups and situps. Now I feel like hell, stink, get winded running around the block ect., ect. Cigarettes is the hardest thing I have ever tried to quit. I am not a quitter. Just a very adictive personality. I only drink beer coffee and water. I don't like soda or Juice(If you ever remodeled a bottleing plant you would see why). What drugs help? any?

I hear ya. I`ve quit and gone back Never mind why. Alcohol is the main culprit.
Zyban. Go to your family physician and ask him about it. I quit with it and will soon again. It really works. But you gotta wanna quit. Its pills. Anti depressants actually. It was noticed years ago that people place on this medication for depression all seemed to quit smoking. Now it is mostly perscribed for that. Tke them exactly how it says. I will almost guarantee you`ll quit. It takes away the urge, the high you get from it. All you will feel is the smike going into your lungs and thats it. There will literrally be no reason to smoke anymore. I urge you to try it if you really want to quit.

I quit 2 years ago. I did the patch but instead of the 6 week routine, I did it in 2 weeks. They have 3 patches that are equal to 20/10/5 cigarette's a day. I was a little over a pack a day smoker. And I started with the 2nd patch(10) for one week. It only takes a couple days to get your body down to that level. Then I did the last patch(5) for the second week. And cold turkey on the third week. The biggest thing is breaking the mental habit more then the physical need. You have to change your routine's. Change how you drive home, in all likelyhood you had a specific program and places you lit up everyday driving home. After dinner get up and do the dishes so you don't think about that after dinner cig. If you are like me and typically go home sit down and relax and have one immediately, don't sit down initially when you get home or sit in a different spot then you are used to. Take it slowly, if you hang around others that smoke. Don't plan to hang around them for a full night of drinking and partying. Maybe just a dinner and then leave immediately afterwards. And take it easy drinking. I had one beer first, then left the bar. Then a week later I had few more beer's and so on and so on.
Final tip, make it as difficult as possible for yourself to get a cigarette. During my first 2 weeks, I didn't carry any cas or bank cards that would allow me to go buy a pack. And I didn't go anywhere that I knew there would be smoking and I could bum one. And if there was I left the first time I even thought about it, the urge won't go away by itself. You need to remove yourself from the temptation.

Goood luck. I thought cigarette smokers called it "drags" and not "hits" like the other smokers wink
Stupid Fast...good luck on the new way of life for you, your family will appreciate it as well will you after the withdrawal's. I luckily have never been addicted to cigs although waaaaaay back in J.High I did smoke because it was cool. Soon I realized it wasn't so cool and quit overnight. Lucky I guess.
Hoss made a good point and it might be something to consider if willpower fails.

EMC There are LOTS of ways, each one works different for different people, because everyone smokes for different reasons...but if you set your mind to it and remember that you are the one in control (not the cig) you can do it!!! :)
Your doctor might have some chemical help to ease the path, but regardless it's a tough road (if it were easy everyone would quit) You will make it if you stay in control of your choices!!! :D

I use to use dip a lot, had a dip in my mouth constantly. One day I woke up and just decieded to stop and threw away what I had left. This has happen before and it lasted one day, but this time was different for some reason. I love my wife and my two little girls and needed to quit before I needed to have half my face removed from some tumor. Well it has been 6 months now and I have nodesire whatsoever to buy another can. From my experience I would say that the physical part of doing it, where you do it, what you are doing and how you are acting has a bigger influance than any nicotene addiction, I feel it is a crock. The thing that helped me was FAKE CHEW, made from herbs with no tobacco or nicotene.
My advise would be to get something else to use as a cig in your hand and change your routine when you have a cig, this will help break the habit. Good luck IT WILL BE WORTH IT!!!
one more thing I wouldn't give up coffee or beer, just don't start drinking more beer.
sorry for length, Wayne

Do it for your daughter. She doesnt understand now, but later she will have a lot of respect for you. Probly more likely not to smoke when she gets older.

The most effective way is to have a heart attack. About 80% quit cold turkey after that.
Like I (and many others) have said before, it must be easy to quit because my wife has done it several times. wink
Serously though, tell yourself "on this day I will not smoke". Take it one day at a time. Good luck.

You need to quit for your daughter...I think the reason I don't smoke is because my parents did. I would go to school and kids would make fun of me because I smelt like cig. smoke. Finally I was able to get my parents to start smoking outside...til this day they still smoke and I wish they would stop for their granddaughter now. My oldest daughter loves my mom almost as much as she loves her father and I....and if she cont. to smoke the way she is now...I don't think she will make it to see my daughter get married, etc.
Here is a suggestion I gave her....( but I guess she does not want to quit)
How many cig. do you smoke a day?(10 ?) Cont. smoking that amount for a month. The next month smoke 1 less cig. each day( so smoke 9 a day for a month).....the next month do the same thing (one less).....shouldn't take you more than a year to stop....and that way you probably won't be such an ass to everyone around you. wink

boy do i know how you feel!!.....i quite new years eve 1995....i feel like a new person, just adding about 15 pounds.......thats ok though, i would rather be chunky, than sicky!!! ...i got the motovation from my daughter to stop smoking, yours will do the same too in a few years, kids think its yucky!! which it is!! and im sure they will Put the guilt trip on you SOONER OR LATER !!! but back to the point, this is stupid but you cant have a puff a day, you have to do it cold turkey!!!...buy having a puff, makes you keep nicotine in your body, kinda like AA, you cant just have one!! just meditate your mind to stop!!!...having a beer to calm you at night may help, and reamber the craving only lasts 10 min, so jog, scream, take a shower do something!!!!....dont think about it!!! also, have something to help you gum, sunflower seeds( thats what i used)....put a rubber band on our wrist and snap it when you want one to remind you that you really dont!!! reamber they will KILL YOU!!! dont you want to see your kids, kids???
sorry to ramble !! GOOD LUCK

I'm in there with ya. I've tried the patch as well as Zyban and neither really worked for me. The main problem with the patch, was that I couldn't keep it on in the summer time when i started sweating. I've also tried the sunflower seeds, which really helped, but after a week, my mouth was so raw, I couldn't hardly eat. I really believe that most products are actually a mental crutch, which if they work for you or anybody else, then it's great. You must motivate your mind and get mad. I have heard that Hypnosis(spelling???) works. Just remember you Can quit anytime you Want to but the key word is WANT. :D :D :D

Well buddy I quit a year ago working next to a guy who smoked 3 packs a day! I used that Ziaban I used only one bottle of ziaban the doctor says that it takes 4 bottles @$108.00 a bottle! I used the ziaban pills and Well don't laugh when I was at home E-Bay! :D I also focused on how much money I was saving by not smoking and how much more money I had to buy things off E-bay! Sounds crazy but I colect old boat magazines and books!
Good luck and just do it!
