Dogs at the river always seem so friendly, so happy. At the Sandbar,, there's always a friendly dog to throw the frizbee or ball to.
Last trip, a family had a 5 week old lab they let swim a little. I always though pups had to be several months old before you took them out like that. Little guy could swim OK, but seemed kinda scared.
Damfino.
Dogs at Glamis seem to be mean.
I figured dogs at the river are playing, dogs at Glamis are at the families RV Camp and take on a guard the house attitude.
Damfino.
One exception at the river was at Echo Lodge. A tent camper in the second row kept letting his Chow mix loose and it attacked every dog it could find. It was a mean tough dog.
The camper was warned several times by the Echo Lodge manager. Finally the Sheriff drove up and asked the dogs owner if he played baseball. The guy gotta a stupid smile on his face and said sure! The Sheriff then told him good, he had three strikes and to be outta there in 30 minutes, or spend the night in a cell full of Queens.
We've been looking into another dog after our Mastiff died.
Labs seem to be a good river dog.
I first wanted a BloodHound because if Jed Clampit had one,, that was cool by me. Ellie May said once that his Hound Duke was so lazy, he'd sleep laying with the grain of the wood on the floor.
They're not lazy dogs,, and are for those who know all about hounds.
Our Mastiff was so docile I never figured she had any attack in her at all.
My kids and her were spending the night at my sisters in Hollywood when a burglar came through the kids (guest) room window. Our Mastiff attacked, followed him through the window and did him pretty bad. I was shocked that she attacked, but more so,, she jumped through the window. The kids say she bit onto the guy held on and the robber pulled her through.
Turned out the burgler had done several robberies in the Hollywood hill area.
What kind of dog do you have? River dog, or Glamis dog?:

Neither, I have a full size collie, like Lassie. Bailey is great, but he'll be 13 next month, and he's not like he used to be. Collies hate water and extreme heat, so he stays home and guards the house. I love that dog, but I have rocks that are smarter than he is. When we first put the pool cover on, he tried to walk on it. That was funny! Thank God we were home!

Got two---neither have come to Havasu with us but my older(8yr) chow/lab came one time when we frequented Senator Wash near Yuma. Scratched the shit out of boat so that was that.
Same older dog goes to Glamis all the time and cleans up after all the slobs leaving trash around(he is very motivated by food) :D He'll run around and sniff everything for about half a day until has paws have been worn from the sand then he'll just hang around and watch everyone zoom by---very dosile dog but very protective of us.
Younger pup has yet to experience the desert but I know she's gonna love it. She can run with the best of 'em.

I have 3 dog's a Lab, Great Dane mix, & a mutt. Don't ask me what I was thinking because I ask myself that eveytime I'm picking up there shit and feeding them. They act like Glamis dog's but once they get to know you there big sissies. I took the Lab to the river once and she loved it but it's to much trouble. Also since I stay at my parent's place in Havasu; my old man is not down with bringing dog's to the river. TPC, if your looking for a good river dog I'd probaly go with a Lab. They love the water and there usualy well behaved dog's.

Our 13 yr experience with a Lab on the lake was great. Ole Chief loved the water, riding in the boat, barking at the jetskis, and chasing the Canadian Geese outa the yard and the cove. We did without when he left us, but a year later wifey and I got a Newfoundland female pup, so she'd be acclimated to the housecats. We'd considered a rescue, but in deference to the feline livestock, a pup was the way to go.
Now instead of short coarse black lab hair on the floor, we have long floating wisps of Newfie hair. Major dust bunnies. Yes, this behemoth is a housepooch. But Molly's got the same duties that Ole Chief had- riding the boat, swimming, barking at jetskis, and chasing the waterfowl that foul the water (ever had to LIVE with Canadian Geese? yeccch).
I'll have to post pix one day.

We have a small tan dog that is 1/2 Border Terrier and 1/2 Dauschound. His name is Kirby and usually you will find him at Bridgewater channel wearing his sunglasses, and sitting on the back sundeck of our boat. He also loves to play with the kids at the sandbar. wink

This is (Happy Dog). She's a total river dog and easily swim across the river if I let her. She's a coker spanial/corgi mix and she's such a sweet heart!!! http://www.fototime.com/{EFFA2853-EC20-4DB0-B763-689A182BD323}/picture.JPG

I have two river dogs both female rottweilers. they both love the water and the nice part about them is they are visual deterents (no one will come up to my dock unless they know my dogs) but they love people. the worse they would do is lick someone to death

Jungle Boy:
Here's little Cricket. Not much of a river dog, but give her a gopher to hunt and it's dead.
http://www.***boat.com/image_center/data/521/259cricket-med.JPG Here's Lucky. She likes the the water, but only up to her belly. She will only "wade". Don't know why.

Labs all the way! We have a yellow female named Tahoe! She loves the river. Can hardly keep her in the boat when we are going slow.

This is Patsy....she's the instigator....kind of a sissy around the water.
She goes swimming when her "brother" does, but only after some persuasion.
She prefers the deserts (Glamis), where she chases God knows what...she cruises around and makes all kinds of friends...
http://www.***boat.com/image_center/data/500/398Patsy-med.JPG
This is Waylon....hes a really mellow dog, fancies himself a lap dog, except he weighs arond 85 lbs, usually gets into trouble with his sister....wades into the water, and it takes some persuasion to get him to come back out. He loves to just chill in the lake.
Absolutely loses his mind if you get one of his throw toys out. He will out play anyone who dares to challenge him. :)
He equally loves the deserts, he pretty much follows his sister around making friends, digging shit up, peeing on everything that he hasnt pee'd on yet... :D
He will f**k your shit up if he thinks you are an intruder, or worse, if you happen to frighten my daughter...

Together they're a formidable couple. also two of the friendliest dogs you could meet.
Love people, and the attention they get.
And very much inseperable.
Dont try and enter my yard if I'm not home...
BTW, they're not really brother and sister, we just got them as puppies about six months apart, and they have grown up together. wink

TrailerParkCasanova, I read about your Mastiff. sounds like a great dog. Our Mastiff "Rambo" is in dog heaven but you brought memories of how mellow that old guy was. Sounds alot like yours. We will get another someday. This is a picture of him sitting in the shade at Lake Clementine in N. Ca about 1985. His toenails did a little damage to the deck of the Wreidt jet......but it was worth it to have him along! http://www.***boat.com/image_center/data/500/824Rambo-med.jpg

TPC,
You can't beat a Lab for personality, love of the water and protection. I've got a yellow that is 9 and won't talk to me for days if I leave him at home. He is alot of work to drag along but in the end it's worth it. I have to take his tennis ball or retrieving dummy away and make him take a swim break & rest. He would retrieve until he just dropped, it's kinda amazing how that stuff is bred into them. The labs have an incredible desire to please their owners, very loyal. I'll post a pic if some one would walk me through it.

Aussie Sheppards, Mesa and Whiskey! They love the desert for motorcycle weekends and the river during summer. http://www.***boat.com/image_center/data/521/794DSC00188-med.JPG
