2,200 Mature Pot Plants Found In Local Forest
LAKE ELSINORE, Calif., 7:03 p.m. PDT September 3, 2003 - Authorities uprooted 2,200 mature marijuana plants in the Cleveland National Forest in Riverside County, officials said.
Authorities have told NBC4 that this is a "very significant" pot bust.
Police took their time combing through the farms because pot farms are famous for being booby-trapped by the owners to protect their investments.
The illegal farm was located along Ortega Highway near the Old San Juan Campground in an area bordered by Orange County, said Jim Amormino of the Orange County Sheriff's Department. The 6-foot to 7-foot plants would be photographed as evidence before they were destroyed. They had an estimated street value of $3 million, Amormino said.
There were no immediate arrests, but investigators said they had leads.
Although the three illicit farms were discovered nearly a month ago, Amormino said the area was being monitored to see whether the growers would return to harvest the plants and arrests could be made.
Authorties conducted the raid because they believed hikers eventually would scavenge the pot, Amormino said.
The area is inspected each year because it is a popular spot to grow the drug.

The area is inspected each year because it is a popular spot to grow the drug. Shouldn't that read "popular spot to grow the multi-faceted useful plant"?
