Anyone know the tow rating on these :confused: I might be picking up a new boat on the west coast so it would be a long haul to Illinois.

The oldest info i could find was from 2001. Luckily the motor, trans, rear end, frame etc. are the same.
with the 4.0 motor
3.55-->4940 lbs
3.73-->5940 lbs
4.10-->5940 lbs
with the 5.0
3.55-->5820 lbs
3.73-->6820 lbs
Those are for 2wd. for 4wd, subtract 200lbs across the board.

I dug out my original '98 Explorer sales book and it says:
with the 5.0 (this is the one that I have)
3.73-->4x2=6,700 lbs 4x4=6,460 lbs.
There are a lot of combinations with different tow capacities depending if you have the 4.0 SOHC or the 4.0 OHV and depending on which gears you have and if it is a auto or manual tranny. Let me know which combination you have and I can give you exact info. Good luck, R/R

I had a 96 a while back (2yrs ago), V8 2wd. One summer season towing to the river and the tranny took a huge crap by the end of the season.

R.R.,I have the 4.0 SOHC,4.10 rear and auto-on demand 4x4. So 4x4 is only engauged when it breaks traction. Thanks for the help :)

Nujetter: If you have the two door it's 4,880 lbs (due to the lower Max. GCWR of 9,000 lbs. vs. 9,500 lbs. on the 4 door). If you have the four door model it's 5,160 lbs. for the 4X4.
My '98 4X4 with the 5.0 motor towed my 19' Daytona jet around just fine without any problems. I did have to put some air bags on the rear springs to keep from dragging its butt when I loaded it down with a lot of camping gear.
Good luck, R/R
