I want to buy a used boat with an outboard, but have never owned an outboard before (just V8/jet's). What kinds of things should I check out on the motor?
Thanks,
Tom

Thanks, but I kinda have my eye on a Stoker. I'm checking it out this weekend.

Motor =
#1 Check Leak down on all six (more than 6% your going to need rings soon!)
#2 Check the compresion on all six (should be within .2 of each other)
Hull=
#1 Check the Transom for water on the inside ( depends on how old, but I have heard of guys drilling a 1/4" hole at the bottom of the transom by the drain hole, and seeing if the wood comes out wet. then you can fill it later)
#2 Check the wood in the seats for rot.

Thanks Rocket. I've done compression tests before, but never a leak down test.

Unfortunately it's kinda hard to find Stokers with Mercs and when I do find them they are out of my price range. I am looking at a Stoker this weekend with a 'Rude on the back. It was originally owned by Al Stoker...I'll post pics on Monday.
